Hello,

I have a 1982 Johnson J70ELCNB that I have a question about. I recently purchased and installed a complete water pump kit, but found an extra O-Ring in the kit that I did not find installed on my engine when I took it apart. I see in the parts diagram that there's an o-ring that appears to go on top of the rubber grommet that sits on top of the water pump housing (part # 0326649). I assume that this o-ring doesn't just sit on top of the housing, but is to be placed somewhere on the driveshaft (near the splines on the top I imagine). The problem is that there was no o-ring on the shaft when I took it apart, and there's no obvious slot on the shaft where I would expect an o-ring to fit into. Can any of you tell me where on the driveshaft this o-ring goes,or if there even is one on this engine?

I don't see one on the diagram, it would be obvious, on motors that have the o-ring there is a recess in the metal right under the shaft splines at the top. Sometimes those kits fit multiple motors and they just include extra parts so they don't have to repackage a seperate kit.

it goes a couple of inches from the top of the shaft.

I was told the purpose is to keep water from rusting up the shaft and getting it stuck in the power head

Not sure on the '82, but if there is no groove a couple of inches down from the top of the shaft, then the groove is internal in the end of the crankshaft. On that kind, you can't see or do anything about a bad or missing oring without pulling the powerhead. A brilliant "improvement" by the factory engineers.

It is correct, the o-ring is to keep water out of the splines and lubricant in. A failed 50 cent o-ring will cost the value of the motor when the splines rust away. Fortunatly, they have done a pretty good job of keeping the water away from the area, compared to some older motors.
