Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Any updates? Hope all is well

Hey, thanks for the bump! I apologize for being a bad iboater lately, well since Thanksgiving

We hit a huge lull period this fall as my work life suddenly started cutting into my personal time life. Well, that and I spent most of the rest of my free time hunting the great american whitetail or should I say watching the great american whitetail not come around when I wanted them to. We had a wonderful Christmas and New Years and spent a good amount of time with the family. We got the boys a new Golden Retriever puppy for Christmas, well ok it was really for me because I missed Bear so much and couldn't take it any longer. Oh, and we also just recently made an offer and had it accepted on a new house. This is more to keep the admiral happy but I'll get a good man cave out of the deal so no complaints here. We'll be moving in June due to the admiral being a teacher and it would be suicide if I asked her to move any sooner than when school gets out. :embarassed:

So, with the pending move, we now have a hard deadline to be trailerable again. I'm hoping to be pretty darn close to splashed by then as well but we'll see. I have spent the past couple of weeks digging the boat project back out from under the clutter that magically accumulated when the work slowed to a halt. We have also started cleaning and painting the trailer parts. I figure we'll get that back together and ready before we hit the boat hard again. I've also gotten back to Troops plan of do something on the project everyday no matter how little. This has really helped get it moving again.

I'll post up picks of the progress and new pup (his names Buddy) later tonight. Work won't let me get to photobucket. I have a 3 day weekend this weekend and I'm really hoping to make some major progress on the trailer this weekend.

catch y'all later,

We had the same conversation all the way to meet Majic & she felt the same way once she saw him w/ me & our other dog walking around together at the adoption day @Petco...

Even when we decided to 'just' foster him until someone better prepared to care for a deaf dog came along..... She knew, nope, he'd found his forever home...

Buddy seems to be adjusting well to the new surroundings:

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Oops, I meant that once she saw him interact w/ me & our 7yr old beagle shepherd mix she knew it wouldn't 'just' be a foster. I was actually the 1 thinking 'Oh, carp, he'll be a high energy 75+lb deaf dog'..... But I did want to foster him from day 1, even took him to 3 or 4 adoption days, but all along the Admiral knew.....

Guess that's why she's the Admiral & I'm just a rear admiral, out back w/ the dogs & a mopbucket

Have a good one!

Maybe some changes round my neck of the woods finally too... But not while it's 25+/- in the garage W/ the heat :cold: :blue:

Loooking forward to your progress too!

JBC, I hope there are good changes coming your way as well. I just wish our Admirals would let us in on things more when they have made up their minds, lol it would make for a lot less begging and livin with the dogs.

Way cool on the move Troop, I just hope you haven't been getting dumped on by too much snow this weekend. Don't worry the Summers and Fall are so worth it to be up north. Yeah, the void is completely filled now. He's settled in and a regular member of the family now. He's even learned how to ignore me like the rest of the boys :lalala:

Thanks man! I can't complain about the start of the year so far, although read on for a reality check from this weekend.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Ok, now on to the weekend progress update......

Saturday I was a good boy and got all the errands and honey do's completed. I even managed to get the garage all set up, heated up and the main frame of the trailer in and up on saw horses to work on. I figured get a head start on Sunday so a grinding we will go. No sooner do I get a good rhythm going than the Admiral informs me we have plans and I need to get cleaned up and ready to go. No problem, I've got all day Sunday and Monday, this thing is getting painted! Sunday morning after church we take the boys to see their new house for the first time and go have a hearty breakfast. Get home, changed and head out to the garage with orders to the troops not to bother me I gots work to do. I'm grinding away happy as a clam with my progress when I take a break and look out the garage window... It's in the mid teens temp wise but a nice crystal clear day. All of a sudden the brain turns on and I realize I'm looking at water in the driveway! Why the carp is there water out there it's too cold, it should be frozen solid. I head out and start investigating only to find it bubbling up from the ground by the house. Now being a do it yourselfer can be a good thing but let me tell you when the line from the well to the house breaks, it's 15 for a high and I know that line is at least 6 feet down, I seriously consider playing dumb :closed_2:

Well, it only took me 2 days of digging to find the leak. I dug a trench between 6 & 8 feet deep, 3-4 feet wide and about 12 feet long but I found it! Total cost to fix it? $11 in plumping parts. I am so glad we are moving. If I had any reservations about the new (practically brand new) house they are gone after this weekend. So, now the garage is all set up and my long weekend is over. What a bunch of carp! but wait, I have time off and as sore as I am today from all the digging I think I deserve a day off to work on what I want to work on.

So, hopefully I'll get something accomplished today. I have about 3 hours to work in the garage before I have to take off for a previous commitment. I'll update all tomorrow on the progress...

I hate chasing plumbing & electrical problems.....

Glad it only took an $11 part... Sorry about the massive trench though...

and that it confirmed the place is a great move!

Oh what fun...not! Had a leak in LA, landlord found it with a hole about 18" in diameter....I asked him how in the heck did he get that close...had been leaking for months, I thought it was run off from neighbors...he told me he just looked for the deepest part of the puddle...I still think it was just luck....get them arms rested...

They say a boat is a hole in the water you throw money into...

I say a house is a bunch of walls filled with stuff you keep paying for and never stop...:mmph:

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Thanks guys, yeah it was a pretty trying couple of days. But.... I did make some good come out of it by taking yesterday off to "recuperate"

My son had ground down most of the outside of the frame this summer but left it in the elements and didn't finish it. This was how it looked when I started yesterday.

Well, I'm not going to show you my god awful welding skills but I pulled out the old stick welder and laid down a poor excuse for a bead. Should be good enough to hold for us

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Here is where I ended the day yesterday, all primered up and ready for the final coat....

I'm trying an experiment with this. I used Rustoleum rust reformer primer (rattle can) and I'm using the Rustoleum Professional glossy white (rattle can). It was in the interest of saving time and thinking of future trailer touchups.

Happy hump day folks, The weekend is coming.

Rattle Can! RATTLE CAN!!! Blasphemy!!!!! Primer looks GREAT!!!! You'll need 2 coats minimum with the rattle can stuff and then I'd go the Tractor supply and get 2-3 cans of their Clear Coat to put on it too! If not I'm thinking it'll chip and scratch pretty easy. Especially around the High Use Human Areas. JMO
