1983 Evinrude 25hp Armature Plate

I just purchased this used armature plate off of Ebay and noticed this black adhesive type goo on the different points I have circled in the pictures. Is this something I need to worry about?

A little background... This is for a E25RCTE 1983 Evinrude 25 hp outboard. It has been sitting up quite a while but the last time it was running it wouldn't run good at all. Almost like it was only running on 1 cylinder. Anyway I took the flywheel off and found this sensor had leaked all the internals down on the armature plate. That is why I just purchased this used one. I am not thinking this was the main problem in it not running right but I wanted to replace everything I can tell needs replacing while I am at it. At this point I greatly suspect the powerpack is the culprit for how it was running. Maybe even what caused the original sensor to leak?

Thanks for any help you can give!

The white sensor coil is used to fire both cylinders.---The black charge coil is used to load up the capacitor in the powerpack.---It also is used for both cylinders.----If it only has spark on one cylinder these two parts are not likely the problem

So does it matter the white sensor coil has the black goo on what looks like the contact area shown in the first pic?

I suspect the sensor is not adjusted properly and is rubbing on the flywheel magnets. It should NOT be touching the magnets. Whether or not that is causing the poor running, I don't know. But racerone is correct, it fires both cylinders, so if one has spark and the other one doesn't, that would seem to mean the sensor is not the cause. I don't know, all bets may be off, considering the damage to it.

EDIT: There is another possibility. The crankshaft bearings may be shot, allowing it to move side to side, front to back. That lateral movement could be why it is striking the sensor. Bad bearings would also cause seal leakage, which would in turn make it run crummy or not at all. See if you can move the shaft/flywheel sideways.

EDIT EDIT: Flywheel could also be bent if somebody has used a puller that grabs the outer rim.

my advice is to clean this black rubish and mark sensor with colour paint. put back flywheel and try rotate flywheel and check if flywheel moved colour paint
i think problem is with upper bearing and midle crank bearing

I think maybe he is saying the black stuff was on it when he bought the plate off EBAY. In the first photo it still has the tag with the part number attached. If that is the case than maybe just needs to be cleaned.

You are correct. The black was on it from Ebay. I just wanted to know if it was supposed to be there and if not does it mean the sensor is bad?

I will take everybody's advice into account when reassembling it. I want it to be right!

Edit: I just heard back from the seller who is from a boat motor dealership who said that is common from the factory. It is basically sealing the surface from corrosion. Unless anybody knows different I will just go with that and use as is.

I dont know if that is normal, but if you look at the new sensors for sale they are clean. Google omc part number 0583387.

Take some alcohol or lacquer thinner and clean off all the goo and corrosion on the plate. And make sure all the connections are both CLEAN shiny metal and tight, and try it. Obviously the person that sold it had issues with his engine. But that doesn't make it bad either. So try it out and see. But first clean the plate up as best you can. JMHO!

I went ahead and cleaned off the black goo that was on the contact area. While cleaning everything up to start going back together I noticed the keyway in the flywheel looks to have been expanded a bit from slop in a key previously I assume? The key in it now looks brand new. I am going to order a new flywheel and a new key to be safe.

WOW, a new flywheel. Have you priced a new flywheel? Last I checked a new one was over $500.00 dollars not including shipping. So unless you just have to have a new one, I'd either look for good used, or go with the one you have if it runs and works. JMHO!

I found a new one on MarineEngine for $72. Doesn't show a picture of it but it is supposed to be the same part number and new.

Arghhh!!! Going ahead and putting a new powerpack on and the holes don't line up! I am beginning to wonder about this motor! The old powerpack had cracks around the mounting holes so maybe somebody had forced that one on. The new one I got is a new CDI powerpack that is supposed to be a replacement for the OEM 0582452 powerpack. I can start the top bolt but the bottom one is about an 1/8th of an inch off from lining up and hitting the block at that position.

Try flipping the pack over and see if the holes line up. Also make sure you don't have any wires pinched behind it.

I have tried both ways. Will not line up either way. It will be either hitting the block one way or hitting the lower motor cover the other. I am going to return it and buy the OEM version. Hopefully that will line up!

Check the plate for a PN -- appears to be 0582417 for your model.

The part number on my flywheel is 582435. I see what you are saying about what it is supposed to be. If it was running good when I bought it with the current flywheel even though it is not the right part number it should be ok for me to use the same part number again shouldn't it?

reference to the listed armature plate for your model. You may be trying to use the wrong armature plate with the right parts.

The armature plate I bought used was listed as 582417 which is what the E25RCTE parts list shows. It looks just like my old one and bolted up just like the old one. It is just the flywheel part number that is not showing on the E25RCTE parts list. The flywheel number is 582435 but I do not have a way to see what that is supposed to be used on, although Ebay has several listings of part number 582435 being from an '83 25hp Evinrude. Is there any way to tell which model it is from so I can see if that model uses the same armature plate?

On some boating sites you can type in the part number and every engine that ever used that part number will be displayed. Boat.net shows it for $60 dollars. You may have better luck with adding a "0" to the number like this: 0582435. That is how such parts are usually listed and may bring up other listings. So far every place I found that part number shows it goes on a Johnson or Evinrude OB engine. And even your E25RCTE model list that as the flywheel for that engine, if that is your model number.

Before you buy another flywheel , post a picture or three of yours and let us see what is your problem with it is. We may have other suggestions about yours after seeing it. :noidea:

Please excuse my picture on this. It is hard getting a good picture down inside the keyway with my cell phone. : ) Anyway the view is from looking down in there from the top of the flywheel. The enlarged area in the middle is what I am worried about. It should be machined straight.
