Well I bought this boat just about a year ago with a blown engine. put in a long block put in billions of hours reassembling everything then blew the heads on the long block 20 hours out new heads hooked up the electronic distributor wrong fried that new distributor rebuilt the carb..... and now just when I think I am about to have some fun I find a soft spot in the deck and now I need a whole new deck and stringers just looking for some cheering on I will be lucky to be in the water by june.. Also hoping the gas tank is not corroded to nothing but if it is I need suggestions on where to get one made

Re: 1983 Formula F20SC

I already looked at moeller they don't have one that fits what I need however I was able to find the manufacturer of the origional tank it was Aluminum Fabrication Products in perry florida, they are now known as RDS they had the origional plans for my tank so I am all set on that if I end up needing one I am somewhat hopefull for the old tank because they boat sat in dry storage for 20 of its 30 years so I am hoping this rot is all from the last 5 that it has been sitting outside not to mention the original tank was epoxy coated with a primer so the parts of the tank I have gotten to so far are in excellent shape

The tank DOES not want to come out I worked on it for a couple of hours earlier and made very little progress I have got a strap under it now after having removed the forward bulk head and I have cut all the way down both sides tomorrow hopfully it just pops out of there with no holes in it

I work nights so I get 6 hours a day to play with the boat plus weekends... if I can get the demo done tomorrow I should have the new stringers cut in on friday and bedded by the end of the weekend it is 2 8ft stringers and 2 3 ft stringers and 3 bulk heads, okay so I am an optimist so shoot me.

p.s. I will post some more photos of the boat and the project tomorrow.. pardon me while I go scratch the skin off my arms

I owe hours of my life to using a flat edge shovel to get the foam out. Use the shovel just like digging in the dirt. You will get a satisfying "pop" when a large chunk come loose.

Small shovel is a good idea....I've used everything from pry bars, to heavy duty putty knives (putty knife for small harder to get to areas) There's really not as "easy way".

Re: 1983 Formula F20SC

Well reading my replies before going out the boat this morning would have saved a little time but I came up with the shovel idea all on my own got one whole side almost done still struggling with the gas tank but I am taking out the stingers and foam so I can access the sides of the tank and then I am going to use the sawzall to cut under the tank Still hoping it is good but not very much going to the fiberglass store tomorrow and the lumber yard

Three strange things that I have found .... first the old stringers were not completely glassed in they were just tabbed in with 12 inch roving and then another piece of 12 inch roving from the top down leaving the whole middle of the stringer exposed,

Second there is no outside stringer they just tacked the plywood in place at the outside edge and then filled with foam ,

and the third item is that the stringers are almost a full inch off the hull with a significant void where the fillet on the outside edge

Photos will be up tonight

well gas tank is out and the verdict is in that it IS GOOD, YAY me! clean it up and paint it with coal tar and it will be good for another 30 years it was epoxy primer coated from the factory and that is what saved it. Now if it would just stop raining I just came in and had to take a shower to get dry. Two more small sections of deck to remove and a little more foam and demo is done.

PS the foam under the gas tank is WAY harder than the rest of the boat any reason for this?

Went to the fiberglass store today, bought most if not all my glass material, Finished all the Demo! Hull is sanded where tabs will attach and I picked up my plywood tonight, by tomorrow should have the stringers rough fit in the boat.... good progress for today if I keep at it I will make my memorial day Launch.

That looks about how wet my Sea ray was. You most likely will have to yank that motor. Nice boat man, and I will be watching.

Frisco now thats hillarious I was over posting on yours while you were posting on mine.

I am not going to pull the motor the transom is fine I checked that last year before I put the motor in and the box around the engine I am going to deskin the outside and then I am going to bed in a new piece of plywood on the skin and then reglass just the one side.. I was planing on doing it for all my stringers but.... I couldn't because the fact that they were not fully glassed they was a 6 inch section in the middle with no glass ... SE la VI

Well the engine box is rebuilt and the fillets are done just waiting for the bedding compound to dry ... tomorrow I will install the two main stringers and fillet those.... best bedding/fillet compound is hull and deck putty from merton's fiberglass www.mertons.com. add mkep. And spread
