Re: 1983 Formula F20SC

Well after posting in the engines forum I checked a whole bunch more stuff and still no difinitive answer so I am throwing half a boat unit(500) at this motor (new carb, and coil) if that doesn't fix it, it will be time for several boat units to take it to the marina and have them go through it

Just do the coil, and plugs first. I bet that is what it is.

I have lost track of how many boat units I have spent.

I have messed with the carb so much going through this issue that I am going to replace it as opposed to completly rebuilding it yet again

How about the spark plug wires? An old trick to check them is to run the engine at night, I mean when it's pitch black, and look for any arcing to ground. Many times it will only do it at certain RPM's like you're describing.

How's your dist. cap and rotor?

well heres the status of this project SNAFU so I have no fuel pressure.. well not none but only like 3 pounds...... further investigation shows more than likely the fuel pump lobe on the cam shaft is done in... this is not the end of the world we could put in electric fuel pump. However when I shut the engine off I heard hissing ... wtf is that ... water boiling in the manifolds........ OMG the water line from the outdrive is pulled off so no water.... so we get to see if we siezed her up now...

Oh man, that is not good. Check the impeller while your at it.

If that lobe on the cam is shot, maybe you should check the lift on the cylinders.

Well after two seasons of working on this boat it is in the water and running two rides so far with no problems .....except owner stupidity.....forgot the plug for the transom an almost sank but other than that ..... all. Is well. Replaced the fuel pump with electric and no more bogging ... time for boating

Glad to hear it....the forgetting the plug is somthing we've all done. Makes you remember next time, now if you forget it again, we can all have a laugh.

Safe boating to you and your family.

Man, sounds like you have had the worst possible luck with this boat. At least I know I'm not alone. lol There's one more thing you should check before taking it out again. Chech the history of the boat and see if some old man with a goat put a hex on it. ;) lol Hope you don't have anymore problems! Good luck!
