OK whiz kids.....OBJ having a problem with the titled engine. Idles like a perpetual lean cough. Have done the carb and double checked the jets. Spark is up to specks.....1/2" jump looks like lighting. Check fuel pump....replaced diaphram and gaskets. Pulled the head (compression by the way is 115 on each hole) and the gasket was good....exhaust cover....same.....bypass cover same.

Checked flywheel key and replaced just for chits and giggles. Got a good look at the reeds while the carb was off and could not see any signs of damaged reeds.

I can install a new set of spark plugs and run for about 10 minutes and the plugs will come out covered in carbon soot. Hard to keep it running....have to play with the throttle and sometimes it spits out the carb. (actually had a flame shoot out today....really cool).

Checked under the flywheel to make sure the upper seal was good....can't see any signs of blow out. Nice and dry.

Nothing coming out the prop exhaust...like nasty heavy unburned oil or stuff like that.

Adjusting the low speed needle has very little effect on the coughing, hacking, wheezing, sneezing.

Ain't overheating and I've tried my shop tank.

Free Bud Long Neck to any whole can give a clue.

Thanks...................Jim

I don't have anything to offer you, OBJ. I've got the same problem and can't figure it out either. I just want to make sure I don't miss any great answers.

I gave up alkyhol, but try this: look at the recirc valve in the intake, at the bottom on the inside. If that's okay, when the engine's warmed up and sneezing, spray starting fluid (safer than WD40) around any and every seam until you find an air leak. If no leak appears, remove the lead plug at the top of the carb where the low speed needle seats and see if the tip of the needle broke off at its base, generating a constant lean sneeze. If any of this works, you need the beer yourself for a job well done!

I'll try the seam trick spite I already looked for any leakage from the crank case halves....already looked at the needle valve. By the way....if anyone checks this thread out.....it's National Budweiser Week......:D:p

Considering everything you've done, I would head for the lower crankshaft seal. If that is shot, it is a straight leakage path through the ball bearing.

I gave up on the Bud too.

I was thinking the same FR.....just wanted to make sure all the basis was covered. Darn things anyways. These power heads are such a pain to pull. Did I mention it's NBW?

Thanks guys....really do appreciate the input.
