i have a 84 bayliner bass boat,it has a 85hp force i want to add power tilt and trim, i found a 1986 125hp force on ebay that looks identical to mine.

so i bought the complete tilt and trim unit for 200.00 will this work on my outboard?

if so will it be hard to install??

well i did something similar with my 45hp. it was harder than i thought it would be. first had to find the correct swivel bracket assembly that was made for a trim unit. then had to completely remove the power head and all to put the new tilt/bracket assembly on there. good luck w/ the project... will be nice to have that trim system, no doubt... pat

It slide right in between the mounting clamps. HOWEVER there is a possibility that the clamps are slightly closer than the widt of the trim cylinderand mount. If that is the case, you will need to loosen or remove the lower bolts and spread the clamps a bit--I'm talking 1/16 inch or less.

Everything bolts right up. A slight difficulty will be the shrouded bolt in the reservoir/motor mount. It helps to have a bent distributor wrench. Not a difficult job but allow a couple of hours or so.

A word to the wise: Liberally coat the mounting holes and shafts with anti-seize. That includes the upper bar that goes through the yoke and the plastic bushings in the bottom of the cylinders.

You will need to support the engine in the tilted position the mount the tilt cylinder and shockabsorber on the yoke.

I do not pay attention to exact systems but if you have a two wire system, you will need to mount relays. A three wire system will work directly off the battery but you CAN also use relays with minor modifications.

If it is a two wire system and did not come with relays and associated wiring, you are not stuck and do not need to lay out big bucks. The relays and sockets can be found in junkyards in lots of Chevys, Buicks, and Fords.

Re: 1984 85hp tilt and trim

exactly what Frank said with two additions.

(1) If your boat never had trim/tilt then you'll need to remove the reverse lock latch and install a thrust bracket (F449354).

(2) Make sure to run large enough wires to your switch. 1985 3w motors are very sensitive to voltage drop in wire. It can be a long way from battery to console and then back to trim motor. If your wires are too small then the voltage drop might keep your trim from lifting.
