my boat motor starts and runs but it dose not engage the propeller what could be the problem

Shift cable adjusted correctly?

not sure how to do that can you tell me how to check
but when i put it in the water it ran but it would try to go then it would jerk then go the jerk

Use the search feature at the top of the page and type in (shift cable adjustment) and search for (clutch dog) also and see if one of these may help!
Seems if your propeller were slipping you would just move along slow regardless of the throttle positon!

Check the oil in the lower unit and see if there is metal shavings in the oil or water in the oil.The gears might have gone and it locks up when put in drive.Jerry

no metal shavings but the oil does smell kinda burnt
