Look on the bright side. Now you'll have peace of mind in a job well done. I always have trouble trusting someone else's work. New wood, glass, and upholstery, you'll get another 20 years out of her.

Boat Salvage yards, Craigslist, or Ebay. That's about the only place you'll find it.

Re: 1984 sea ray upholsty turned rebuild

Nice to see someone else doing the same as me. I also have a 84 searay seville that im totally restoring. I pulled out the motor and and have the floor cut out from the transom to the back of the bow. Should I run the stringers the full length or tie into where there is no rot? I was thinking about just joining it up to the existing stringers right below the dash area. I'm new to the forum and I'm not sure if this is considered high jacking your thread, sorry if it is.

Re: 1984 sea ray upholsty turned rebuild

nickypoo, nice find i ordered 2 this morning. there exactly what i was looking for.

csray, it's your call but if you look at the front pics of my boat you can see that the front of the stringers were not glassed in very well.
you might want to start your own thread and post pictures, theres lots of help to be had on this site.

Re: 1984 sea ray upholsty turned rebuild

there is nothing like a great neighbor, mine shows up this morning with grinder in hand ready to work.
cheep labor aswell, he works for beer and pancakes.
not sure what everyones chose is on grinding discs but i can now highly recommend the fiber discs from diablo.
using a 36 grit today made short work of grinding. probabaly another half day of grinding then the rebuild can begin.
new pics up soon.

I am SO going to be watching this thread - I'm also starting what I thought was going to be cosmetic changes to my 1984 Seville, which is turning-into a full-out rebuild, just like yours!

OH -

Could I borrow your neighbor?? :D

Re: 1984 sea ray upholsty turned rebuild

why does work always get in the way of working on my boat, the first nice day all spring here and i get stuck working 16 hours.
well atleast today in the rain i had some time to start the orngional project, the upholstry.
here a bit of what i had to start with

i think this will be the hardest to recreate, it sits up in back over the engine and back seats.

Re: 1984 sea ray upholsty turned rebuild

i think it about time to get some of the materials im gonna need.
3/4 ply for stringers and floor, 1/2 ply for seats 1/4 ply for side trim upholstry.
what i dont know is how much polyerster resin and fiberglass im gonna need, i plan on laying a couple layers on the hull before the stringers which will be glassed in and also the deck will be fiberglass.
any help on estimating the fiberglass and polyester resin will be great.

thanks

Re: 1984 sea ray rebuild (new pics & question)

Uhmm, does the hull seem to be particulary flimsy? Are you NOT going to be putting the 2 part Pourable foam back in? It's impossible to give an exact "Quote" of everything you'll need but this list will get you "Started" and from there, after you've done some "Glassin" you should have a good idea of what you'll need to "Finish"

Here's the Starting List.

  • PPE

Respirator (Full Face Preferred $100) if not then double filtered 1/2 face and Goggles with vents taped over.
    Latex Gloves (1 Box)
    Leather Gloves 1 Pair
Full cover Hooded Tyvek suit. Rubber Band or Tape the Wrists and Ankles
Talcum Powder (coat yourself TOTALLY with talcum powder prior to every grinding Session. USE A LOT)

    Equipment

    Prybars, Hammers, chisels, Putty Knives
Flat tipped shovel to remove foam, Old Carpenters Saw (The Old Fox Hole Army Surplus Shovels work well)
    Circular Saw
    Sawzall
    Dremel Tool
    Router
    Drill
    Random Orbit Sander
    Rasps, Files
4 1/2" Grinder with Backup Pad and 24 grit resin coated sanding discs
    Masking Tape
Shop Vac for dust control or Dust Collector if you're fortunate enough to have one. It's good to create a Plastic Tent over the boat to contain the dust. There WILL be a LOT of it....A LOT!!!!

    Product

3 sheets 3/4" Arauco Ext. Grade Plywood
1-2 sheets of 1/2" for Seats
    1 sheet for Side Panels

    15 Gallons 435 Polyester Resin
    10 qts Cabosil
1 lbs 1/4" chopped strand fibers
    25 yds 1.5 oz CSM
    15 yds 1708 Biaxial Cloth
dozen 1 qt plastic mixing buckets
    1/2" x 5" Fiberglass "Bubble" roller
    Dozen Stir Sticks
2 dozen Short nap 6" nylon roller covers and trays
    2 dozen 3" Chip Brushes
