Already have plans for the salvaged cabinet wood.

Certified Sales owns them, and sells them off out if MA. They have a slightly newer 34C but they came with oak wood, not teak. I'm on Craigslist every day, still haven't found the boat I can buy parts off.

Re: 1984 Silverton 34C Remodel/Update/Upgrade PIC HEAVY

So my latest varnish work has been using Interlux Schooner 96. It's proven to work well but my quart started to skin over and no matter what I tried it seemed to continue to happen. The skin would break up and little bits would float in it and end up on the piece. I decided its time for a new quart. Figuring these were build coats, I thought I could simply use what I had to build and then too coat with the good stuff.

I remembered an old can of Helmsman Spar Urethane I had. I have it a whirl. This photo is the second coat... Yes second coat. I'm very impressed with how it spreads and flows! Much thinner than the Schooner, thicker than the polyurethane I've used in the past. I want to see how it finishes, and if it holds up next to the high end varnish, I may continue to use it. It's very easy to get at any big box store!!

This panel measures 36" by 66" and will fill in behind the salon chairs. This will be a test of my varnish work. A large flat panel! It has the third coat drying now.

That Helmsman Spar Urethane is good stuff. I'm going to use that as a final finish on a laminate wood rifle stock after those pics :)

Thanks, that couch is a double recliner (wall hugging one as well) so it's definitely going to be a nice place to relax.

The Helmsman does look good, but after a side by side, the more expensive Interlux and Epiphanes varnish does look better. I will probably stick with the helmsman as it builds coats fast enough and doesn't dry up to form a skin as bad as the other varnish.

Thanks, was going for boaty but subtle. I like the look, just not sure I have enough to do all I want.

25thmustang you have inspired me! Took the teak off of the front of my boat today. I followed your steps with the sander, acetone and applied my first coat of varnish tonight. Only wish my boat had more teak now. It's already awesome after the first coat. I think I may add more teak to the boat. It just makes the boat pop. Thanks for the inspiration and I am loving this thread. You do amazing work!!

Glad to hear it. I think teak (when done right and kept up woth) honestly adds a special touch to boats. Whites and greys are clean, but a warm shiny teak really stands out.

What varnish did you choose? I'm pretty sure on the next few years I will have tried every brand out there!

Re: 1984 Silverton 34C Remodel/Update/Upgrade PIC HEAVY

I used the Cabots gloss spar varnish. First time I have ever done any varnishing. I saw the Helsmans but wasn't sure if that was the one you used. The Cabots has uv protection so I figured it would work. When I saw that you put 5 or 6 coats I thought you were just putting that many coats for the hell of it, but the directions actually say 4 to 5 coats. When you sand in between what do you use? Steel wool, sand paper? Anyways I'm learning a lot watching your handy work! Great job man!

Re: 1984 Silverton 34C Remodel/Update/Upgrade PIC HEAVY

Thanks.

For exterior varnish it is all Epifanes Woodfinish Gloss. Expensive stuff but I like the look of it.

After a few build coats I begin to sand with 220 grit. Knock it back down flat. Then coat it, then sand, then coat... In the end I believe I got around 8-9 coats on. Sanding removes some build up, but creates a flat surface. Some trucks I've learned. Use a good quality brush. I've done it with foam but find the brush works better. Strain the varnish into another container. Brush in one direction (back into where you just varnished) with as few strokes as possible. One quick tip off after the piece is coated and before it begins to set should give a nice flat finish.

The best secret I've found, lower your expectations! If you fight to get every bubble or piece of debris out, you will go crazy. Decide what your happy with and remember only you will see the negative in the finish, everyone else will think it looks perfect!
