I'm with you on the storage, if its not needed by you and the family, rip it out! Since thats your main entry into the stern of the cabin, its gonna be huge to have the extra walk room.

I think you should go with some floating hardwood floor in there to make the area look even larger. This is the stuff I just put in my brothers boat. Floating floor with pad under, even incorperated all the existing hatches. The color selection and grain was perfect for his boat, kinda has a bark look to it. Something to think about, especially at less than $4 a square foot. ;) Might choose a color if you go this route to complement the existing trim though.

Hope you don't mind the picture post.

My father and I have thought about flooring and have decided to stick with lighter carpet. Carpet feels nice, may help quiet the cabin down and I actually prefer the look. Being as that a lot of wood and wood veneer will be going in the boat, I needed something to help keep it bright.

The loss of storage was the only downside and the fact that we haven't used the vberth or tall lockers for storage yet, I think we will have no problem.

Cabinet was cut down and biscuit/glued back together. Will be ready to rebuild in the boat shortly.

I think you will be happy with the extra space, and judging by your previous work, You will, without a single doubt, make it look BETTER than factory.

I hope so!

Tossed some varnish on a few pieces and the main part will go back in tomorrow.

Got the modified cabinet fitted. I did get a coat of poli on it but it was too dark to get in photos.

It's nice to come down run out, anchor up and just enjoy being on the water. I will be much happier when the interior is back to shape and its unwrapped.

Thanks, progress is slower than I'd like but life gets in the way. So long as the boat never sits I will be happy.

Wow, this is looking great. You've got some great skills and tips / techniques. I am especially impressed with things like flipping door panels around. Very smart and creative.

Are you going to cut back the counter where the barrel chairs are going? It seems like having the backrest tucked under the countertop if you sit in the chair you will hit the counter with your back. Maybe you did say you are doing that and I did not see it?

Also, are you keeping the lower helm station? It appears the wheel is gone to open up a bit of space; why not remove the throttle / transmission controls too for a fully clean look and to gain back usable counter top space that you may use elsewhere? I really like the layout of the boat; very usable, a floating luxury condo for 2. Whenever I dream on yachtworld I usually pass over the 84's because I hate that lower control station and the dark wood/orange formica but man you have me turned around seeing that patience and the right stuff goes a long way.

Here is a little home made secret I use in the house and cars; I mix Woolite detergent and water (1:5 ratio) in a spray bottle. Color safe soapy cleaner for everything. With a bit of scrubbing you might get some of that staining out of the monkey fur in the galley. The wood work is so gorgeous that my eye is drawn to the monkey fur stains. I know that is from time and it is part of a boat being a boat but hopefully that is something that may help you out.

Have you decided what to do with the wall in the galley where you pulled off the old wallpapre? I have seen at Home Depot a product for a kitchen backsplash that comes in sheets and is made to look like high end metal but it isn't; search on Google for "Fasade Wall Panels" Fasade is the name of the company. Whatever you do will look great. I'm just dreaming now of doing my own seeing how awesome yours is coming out.

Keep the updates coming, I am learning a lot and loving seeing your dedication and skills showing off in great results. I hope none of my comments came off as harsh; just my free 2 cents worth of input. Those pics of when the boat was splashed look like a brand new boat.

Keep it up. That boat's 29 years old this year; probably didn't look that nice on day one!

Decided on a whim to move the microwave from on top of the counter to under the shelf at the salon wall. A million times better and took about 30 minutes to do.

Old location from day one:

Re: 1984 Silverton 34C Remodel/Update/Upgrade PIC HEAVY

The counter is cut and modified.

I've ha good luck with Folex on the monkey fur but do agree, woolite works great with some warm water.

Lower helm stays but the wheel is off. I like the ability to have throttles shifters and gauges below. Not much room is gained and a lot of work to remove.

I will be doing a wallpaper for now but have dreams of mahogany veneer.

Thanks

I really like reading this remodel. You make it look so quick and easy (and it isn't) but it gets us day dreamers thinking more and wanting to tackle things. Step 1; buy a boat...but anyways.

The movement of the microwave is simple and highly effective. Really nice job. I just got to thinking that if you built a cabinet from the shelf where the microwave used to be up to around where the wood trim is for the window frame you'd gain valuable enclosed storage space, have a showpiece of badass cabinetry, make your boat that much more functional, AND cover up that monkey fur. That poor old ugly flourescent light could even live on in the cabinet. That's so many win's I don't dare try to count so high.

It sure is easy to be a keyboard designer when its someone elses wallet, time, and labor.
Looking forward to the next round of updates.

Re: 1984 Silverton 34C Remodel/Update/Upgrade PIC HEAVY

The cabinet idea isn't a bad idea at all. The big thing keeping me from just pulling the trigger is the wood. Any additional cabinetry needs to be done out if teak and even with that, I want to use teak that matches exactly. I have some requests out to find a totaled boat like mine to try and get some of the same teak wood Silverton used, but it's a long shot. Once I have plenty if material, the possibilities are endless!

I know an outfit called Certified Sales has a bunch of Hurricane Sandy boats up for sale on yachtworld. I don't know if they actually own them or just represent them. I'd try your local craigslist Boat section, as well as Long Island, NJ, etc...places likely to have recently totaled boats. Any chance to salvage from the cabinets you cut out on the starboard salon? That really opened up the space!
