Sounds like our water conditions, slime growth.

A full blast and then barrier coat/paint is probably the "right" way to do it. The right way and the most cost effective way rarely ever over lap.

I'm going to bore you guys with some more wood progress.

Half done with the head door. It's all glued up and one side of the stiles and rails got varnished. I'll flip in a few days and hit the other side.

Last night was time to tackle the missing gel coat area. PO had the fender in this location and over time it wore the gel. I was elected to color match and on the second attempt I thought it was close.

Here we see the kit.

The area to patch. That's 1" wide tape btw.

The gel as applied, I was hopeful at this point.

Having heard gel coat isn't supposed to change colors as it dries I thought things were set. After letting it dry, and removing the plastic, this is what was left. We have enough to do this 5 more times if desired, but we will see what a sand and buffing does to it.

The day after, no good. Round two will take place Saturday.

The accolades continue on the varnish work you're doing. Every piece looks great!

Tough break on that gel coat color match. Wow, that changed significantly, didn't it.

Yeah it seemed to change darkness and color. I will make another attempt tomorrow and see how it goes.

Had a few hours down at the boat today. It consisted of round two on the gel coat, and pro polish on the green portion of the hull sides.

Mixed it up light, and saved half of the color in case I want to redo it again. With it under the plastic, it looked light.

Now here is the strange part. After removing the plastic, it was darker. Now pay attention to the gel coat around the light area, as that is the color it needs to be buffed back to. I think it's fairly close. We will see with the sanding and polishing how it looks.

Another quick update from last time. Got the under water gear clear coated and back in place. Some 4200 and hopefully they are leak free and function.

Then it was polish time on the green. This is my father taking the residue off from my polishing. This system works well. The DA puts the PP on and polishes. The wool pad on the buffer takes it off and leaves it nice and clean.

Also went at the black rubber area below the hull/deck joint. It was basically white. A little acetone and it looks presentable. Not perfect, but better.

Also, on the BM/PP thread, we checked with a tape measure. On the green, 16" away is crystal clearn, the 36" mark can be seen and read, but the actual real downfall, is the fiberglass matt texture can be seen in the hull and it makes reflections look a bit off. In the end I think the hull came up well. A boat near ours was done by hired pros, and unless the guy spent very little, it's nothing like the final product we have. Granted we have a few days and hours into it.

It looks terrific, mustang. You can read detail in the reflection and it looks like good color transfer too! Great color transfer actually. If you're able to read the 36 inch mark on a tape held perpendicular to the hull, you'll never be able to see any imperfections from my house.

Matching the gel coat, white to white especially, has got to be a nightmare. From your photos, it looks like you're awfully close. I know that you can blend automotive paint with a wool bonnet if you're very careful. The wool can heat up the paint to a degree that allows it to flow slightly. Is the same thing possible with gel coat? If it is, and you're close with the color, is it possible to blend it with a wool cutting bonnet?

Going to see if the color will blend in a bit when the area is cut and buffed. I may call it acceptable for now, and try again next fall, or leave it be. The boat is not perfect, and I'm sure she will get a couple of dock bumps here and there anyway.

Thangs Buggy. It's not that the other boat looked "bad", just that if I was paying for someone to do work for me, I would expect great results. Luckily the placement of his boat is behind another two from ours, so I don't think he would see it. We were told by the guy who works at the marina and lives in the house behind the boat, that this is the cleanest he has ever seen this boat in the 10+ years it's been there.

The real goal is a clean looking boat that can be kept up with each season. Instead of one that looks chalky and bad each year.

Your buffing work is definately coming along. It also appears your boat is at the house... Consider me jealous. Mines 45 minutes from home!

^^^^ thanks,
and it is sweet to have her right outside. especially tonite, we are supposed to get 3 to 5 inches of heavy wet snow:eek: tonite. i am not sure if the campertop can hold it,,,yikes,,, the winter cover is away allready so i guess i'll stand guard lol.

i know not everyone will agree but i think if you can get away without breaking anything,,lol, you will almost always put more into it than a professional job gets ya. the important part is to learn the way they do it and just add the tlc.
your boat woodwork and the hull shows that 10 fold. if you were paying for it, it wouldn't be half as nice.
again great work!:D
when is the splash day?

Thanks, splash is hopefully this upcoming Thursday or Friday, but that is ever changing, due to the work that needs to be done. The motor still need to be all buttoned up. The underwater gear is done. There will be on the water projects, but at least once its in, I may enjoy the work a little more.

Man, your ship is really getting there man. Feels good when it starts all coming together. :) I might try one of those buffer thinga magigys someday, lol

It really looks sharp, from the teak work to the hull shine, your detail is showing and it will show even more once she's splashed. It is hard to find professionals today that take pride in there work. there just trying to make a buck unfortunately. Thats why I like doing it all myself, I know if nothing else, I know exactly what has been done to the boat. Great work and great details.

The rub rail looks amazing compared to what it was, if you hit it again with the acetone it will get even better. I then coat it with a uv protective wax.

Re: 1984 Silverton 34C Remodel/Update/Upgrade PIC HEAVY

Thanks guys.

Motor work just means some hoses, putting the risers and closed cooling back on the starboard and finish oil and fluid changes. Nothing a day can't finish.

I too enjoy working on the boat verse paying to have it done. My father is the do it all type and between him and I we have tackled each boat 100%. Only ever once paid for a bit of canvas work. Decided after that I will do my own canvas projects to save the money!

Going to the boat tonight to keep plugging along.

Got the Cruisers Inc sold yesterday, so that is a big relief! Down to one boat!!

Congratulations on getting the Cruisers Inc sold. Getting my second boat sold is still way high on my list of things to do. The Silverton is looking great. I love all that teak!

Thanks guys, as sad as it was to see her go, I'm glad to see her go to someone to enjoy. I hope he gets tons of years of use out of it!

Definitely replenished the bank account that was depleted for the silverton.
