Re: 1984 Silverton 34C Remodel/Update/Upgrade PIC HEAVY

i agree, the grain on that piece will make it all worth while;), and once shining like the rest of the kandy it will add a nice accent to the front of the cabin. besides in this case the laminate should add extra protection in the ( i believe, "line storage area")behind the door. it is an excellent choice for an accent piece.cant wait to see it done

that reminds me of a funny story,,,, so thanks for letting me share a lil here,,,, i spent the 1st few weekends of the season with my no winch having self,,,, on the front deck pulling the anchor with one hand and shoving the anchor line thru that lil hole that leads to my front line storage with the other,,,,,, quite frankly it was a real pita to do!!! so somewhere along the line i finally convinced the admiral to reach thru that acsess hatch and pull the line through while i was pulling the anchor up,,,,,,,,,,,
perhaps the smartest idea i had,,,,, for me!:D and for the admiral,,,,,, not so much:eek:!
needless to say, even though tired sometimes and sleeping she pulls it together to be the most beautiful winch i could ever dream of enjoying,,,,,, thats my baby and i'm lucky to have her:D

Lol that's quite the job, and having been both the winchy and the wincher, I can say that you lucked out there! If she does it long enough, keep emailing her windlas ads, and see how long before an impromptu gift is received!!

Sounds good to me! I'm starting on the galley door tonight. One coat of spar varnish although I'm not thrilled with it.

So instead of grabbing the cheap Poly that I've had good results with, I spent a little more and picked up a "spar varnish" from the big home improvement store. It said recoat in 2 hours which was a plus. So after the first round the wood looked grey and terrible. It dried clear but very little shine (I bought the gloss varnish). I hit it with round two and it looked better than round one, but very little shine. Did the final build coat and... Very little shine. Now keep in mind this is only to build up the grains of the wood, the final coat(s) will be with the Epifanes that I like so much to give it a mirror look. I just was not impressed with this product.

That's what I used on my candy, with good results after 6 coats lol
i sanded every other coat. It takes a lot of coats to. Buildup

It just hasn't seemed to gain a glossy look. It's more satin. I'm sure the Epifanes will fix that though!

Im no expert by any means and i'm not sure of the differences between the poly you used before and the spar varnish but i suspect that the spar varnish is penetrating a little deeper into the wood,
now, i know your woodwork blows mine outa the water.:D
I had a lil trouble with the spar varnish on the first couple of coats, with runs etc, but i finally got in my head "lots of thin coats" it went alot easier. and it did soak into the wood on the first 3 coats, i believe the 4th coat started to bring more shine and the 6th one made it look like candy. ,,, although my pieces i've done so far are all small pieces, the stuff is holding up great in the elements.

it looks like the poly and epifanes combo gets her done a lot quicker, with quite frankly an "awesom finish"
again your woodwork is simply stunning, and i'm interested how this piece looks once you get the epifanes on it.
cant wait to see the results,

Thanks guys, I'm sure the wood looks better in photos than in person, but I'm the only one who notices the flaws.

The spar is just to fill the grain so it's look isn't too much of an issue. The Epifanes will give me the high gloss I need.

I'd live to say I was an expert, but I simply research and try things out. I'll be the first to post if it works great, or fails miserably!!

Re: 1984 Silverton 34C Remodel/Update/Upgrade PIC HEAVY

I decided to do a play by play on this work.

It appears the original center panel might actually be mahogany, with a plastic laminate over the top (orange was original, but a previous owner did light gray on my boat). In an effort to make it look a little better, I decided to spin the center board, and have the mahogany wood show. This would look better up front, but also place the laminate in the closet, or storage area, making it easy to keep clean.

To begin, we take a door and unscrew it from the hinges.

We then flip it around and have a look at the back, what will soon be the front.

It's not beautiful, but it will do until I go custom wood work...

Now, as much fun as it used to be using the corkscrew to pull teak plugs, I found using a small starter bit, followed by a large drill bit, allowed a clean and FAST removal. Within 30 minutes I had 5 doors unplugged and apart.

Then we flip the panel and slide it in for a "test fit".

This next step is new. I hadn't done this before, but the back of the panels weren't sanding right. It felt as if it had a coating or stain. So out came the Orange Strip, and I let it soak for 30 minutes. I then hit it with a scraper and sure enough... there was something there.

Once scraped, this is where it appeared to be Mahogany. If any of you know mahogany in its unfinished form, it has a unique ability to sheen... Hard to describe, but at different angles it shows different colors. The panels seemed to have this mahogany look.

Now, it was stain time. The light colored wood panels were nowhere close to the darker stiles and rails. A dark walnut colored stain was used.

Then they sit.

Finally they were wiped and a test was done. Not sure if the color matches, but I think they may get another stain with the dark walnut, or potentially a more brown or reddish colored stain.

It's not ribbon striped mahogany as found in the higher end boats from back in the day, but in comparison, I think all varnished up and mirror like, it should look nice!

I put the original one I tried back in the boat. I like how it blends with the rest of the galley wood. Doesn't stand out, and when the varnish is applied it should be nice.

Looks sweet!
Thanks for the play by play. How easily did the teak plugs come out? Plugs have stopped me many times from refinishing wood doors etc( for fear that the glue would hold and I'd not be able to finish leaving it all bunged up)

When I was using the screws to pop plugs they caught back. The drill bits takes a few seconds and with the bit almost the size of the hole, it takes the whole plug out. The glue may hold little bits but they seem to come out clean in the end. Give it a try!!

Poor photos, but the poly should be all set, and then varnish will commence once I sand the poly smooth. I put the cabinets back together to keep using the boat. Put the newly purchased handles one as well.
