Re: 1984 Skeeter Champ 16' Restore

Thanks fellas! I'm out the door for the weekend, but I did manage to wash, polish, and wax it. The Ugly Duckling shines again! It's overcast skies again so outdoor pictures were less than spectacular, but here's some from the garage that kind of show the shine. I'm going to build up some more wax on it, but it's just about complete.

Re: 1984 Skeeter Champ 16' Restore

My carpet arrived today at the doorstep and I couldn't wait to get home to open my Christmas gift and get it ready to put on the trailer tomorrow! I'm sure you could imagine the disappointment and anger when I opened the box to find two rolls of BLACK carpet, and not the Burgundy I ordered. Nevermind that it took 4-5 business days longer to get here than I was told it would (once FedEx got it, it only took 1 business day, so it's not a FedEx issue). To make matters worse, the company expects me to wait 10 business days for an RMA to to authorized, and then expects ME to pay the return shipping, and then to wait another 5-7 business days to process the correct order (if I choose to do that instead of just a refund), and then an additional 3-7 business days to wait on shipping. So much for my Christmas gift. :( Over a month for them to correct their mistake?! NO THANK YOU!!! First thing Monday morning I am disputing the charge with my credit card company, and if this company doesn't want to cover the return shipping, I will have 24'x12" black bunk carpet if anyone needs some! I'm going to keep the carpet company name a secret for now in case they decide they want to make it right the proper way, but if they don't by the time I return to town on the 31st, I'll be sure to let the community know which carpet company NOT to use!

Merry Christmas to you all!

Really sorry to hear about the carpet. Some of the companys act as if it were your fault they shipped the wrong item. Hope you get it worked out.
Don't let it spoil your Christmas. You still have time to get it right.

Hope the fish have sunglasses on when your boat goes over them. What a great looking shine. :D

Wishing you and your family a Very Merry Christmas.

Re: 1984 Skeeter Champ 16' Restore

Thanks Decker. After mulling over it all evening, the wife and I seem to think that just maybe the screw up happened for a reason. We're starting to think that the black trailer carpeting may look better in the end and we're pondering just going with it. Maroon and black looks good and black and white look good together as well. It will also throw a color break on the trailer, instead of it being 100% maroon. Hmmm....

I agree with that...I would still try and get the company to make it right, tell them "ok here's what is gonna happen! Ill keep it, but you need to make it right and give me a discount!" the black will look good, and breaking up the maroon will give more definition and character to the trailer.

Re: 1984 Skeeter Champ 16' Restore

Sorry Judge, it's been busy around here! I was off for 10 days over the Holidays, but didn't get a chance to as much as look at the boat! After all the Christmas celebrations, I spent 5 days with my dad at scout camp. We got back just in time to spend New Years with some friends... and before I knew it, I was back to work. This week was "catch up" week from everything I missed over the 10 days being off.

Whew, so that said, we had some AWESOME weather here in Texas this weekend. Yesterday it was 70+ and today was in the high 60's. I figured that was a sign to get my butt back to work on the boat.

Now, where did I leave off last? Oh yeah, my carpet mishap! To recap, I had ordered maroon carpet from a company for my bunk boards. When it came in, it was black. After mulling it over and some less-than-ideal communication with the company, I decided to just use the black (and it ended up being the RIGHT choice!!!) and fight the battle with the company later. Well, after fighting back and forth with the company, we came to a resolution. Granted, it's not anything great, but at least it was progress. After I had carpeted the bunks, I came up with an idea to carpet the step boards as well (originally, they were plain wood with diamond plate). So the resolution I got with the carpet company was that they would send me an additional 3' of the black carpet and a 10% off discount on my next purchase. Basically, about a $25 deal.

So here is a shot of a freshly carpeted bunk. On the left is the old and on the right is the new.

Re: 1984 Skeeter Champ 16' Restore

Yesterday I pulled the trailer out of the garage and got to work. I quickly realized just how un-ready I was to put it back together, but I had to manage for now. For example, the trailer rollers and bow stop need to be replaced. The front roller and rear roller were so corroded that when I pulled the pin, a steady stream of rust flowed out like sand. They were also beat up and discolored pretty bad. For now, I put them back on, but I will replace them all with new ones in the near future. Also, I need a new winch up front for the same reasons, but again I will replace it later.

Anyway, I started by lightly attaching the bunk supports on the trailer and just sitting the boards on them. Looks good to me! I put the hull back on it and finished the positioning. Once done, I screwed the boards down and tightened up the supports. Some of these pictures are BEFORE the boards were secured and some are from AFTER the boards are secured.

Re: 1984 Skeeter Champ 16' Restore

And today I started to re-wire the trailer and get the remaining hardware put on.

First, the winch tower (and also having to reposition the trailer jack)
20120108165123126.jpg

Then, the fenders and the step boards (I had to run in to town for some new bolts, screws, etc so that ended up taking a lot of daylight). By the time I got the fenders and step boards on, it was dark.

Shortly after the above picture, it began to rain so I had to quickly roll back in to the garage. I started working on the side boards, but I ended up calling it quits for the night so I'll stop my progress here for now. I still have to wire the left side of the trailer (I need to solder and crimp a wire that I had to cut during tear-down). I'll finish up the side boards and wrap it up by reinstalling the license plate and rear lights. It's close!!!!

Your trailer looks great with the black runners on it.
It's coming together very nice.

Re: 1984 Skeeter Champ 16' Restore

We've been getting some much needed rain since Sunday night so no picture progress, but I did find a fellow fisherman from a Texas fishing forum that I'm a member of that offered to make me a complete wiring harness. He was so eager to do it that he went ahead and made it without me even giving him the go ahead! Ha! This is what he said about it. Sounds pretty good to me and will save me a significant amount of time! Hopefully he isn't wanting to become rich off of it, though. :D

"made you the harness today from memory. There will be some extra in front and back but it can be coiled in case you have to replace a connector sometime. harness is color coded. you will have running lights front and rear, a trim switch on the bow and console, a depth finder at front and console, bilge and live well at console, and there will be wiring direct to fuse block at console for the console depth finder. You'll have extra spaces for interior lights if you want, connectors on all ends; you just have to crimp them. all wiring oil resistant 14ga with main power being 12ga"

Re: 1984 Skeeter Champ 16' Restore

That was my plan/thinking as well but this guy took the initiative to just jump in and do it. He has an old '73 Skeeter that he did and he was in the business in his younger days. Says he just loves doing it... which is why he can't charge me for it. SCORE!!!

Re: 1984 Skeeter Champ 16' Restore

I'm sorry guys, I've really be lacking in photo updates here.

I'll be picking up my wire harness something in the next week. He also said he has some chrome side rails, new bow/stern lights, and bags of unopened stainless steel screws. In addition, he's throwing in trim switches for the bow and the splashwell, a fuse block, a front control panel thing, and whatever else he can find. All for FREE! Apparently he had an old Skeeter he was restoring, but ended up not being able to finish (I forget the reason). He said I can have anything he can find that he was going to use for his project... all in exchange for a fishing trip or two when I'm done.

I've also finished up on the trailer (thanks Judge for the picture on your thread in regards to the license plate. I found my light kit had the same bracket so no more ugly jury rigged aluminum bracket). I do have a wiring issue, though, but I'm not sure if it's the truck or the trailer. Basically, all lights go off when I step on the brake and the flashers both flash if I only have the left or right flasher on. I'll have to play with it more tomorrow. I'm thinking (hoping) it's just a bad ground.

And with the trailer done, I have started to make my patterns for the stringers, clear out the remaining foam and junk, and grind down the hull.

Re: 1984 Skeeter Champ 16' Restore

yeah, your slacking alright! but with all the new goodies you will be bringing home, you'll get to moving right along soon enough, I am assuming pre-restore your lights worked fine...so can't see it being a truck wiring problem....if you cant get a sufficient ground, try clearing the holes of all paint, and under the nuts scrape off just enough paint so the nut touches bare metal, but still hides it. if that doesn't work, you can run independent grounds for each light, which is a good fail-safe anyways.

Re: 1984 Skeeter Champ 16' Restore

Yes, I am definitely slacking! Still waiting to arrange a time that I can drive the 2 hours to pick up all my free goodies.

As for my wiring problem, I've confirmed it is not the truck (bought one of those testers just to make sure). I'll have to crawl underneath and make myself a good ground.

Notice how I said "I'll have to..." and not "I did...". HA! Last weekend I ended up cleaning out the garage (with a good reason, at that!). In the process, I put the top cap back on the hull (and it fit back on like a glove). It kind of put a smile on my face seeing the boat look more like a boat; even if it is just temporarily. :)

And this is why the garage got cleaned out. I needed a place to park the new toy for the kids. Actually, I think my wife and I have been playing with it more than the kids. My brother-in-law sold it to me for a whole $100; I couldn't pass! HA!

My son and I have been busy with his Pinewood Derby car this week (and the go-kart), so still nothing new to report. Well, I did do some more cleaning/grinding in the hull, but only a few feet so nothing to really display. I'm really going to try and force myself to at least fix my wiring problem tomorrow. I've got to get back in to it if I want to get back on the water come spring/summer! Sigh...

Re: 1984 Skeeter Champ 16' Restore

Hi fmjnax,
Glad to see you are back.

The black carpet on the trailer definitely looks killer, so does the trailer. Pleased to hear the carpet people gave some compensation for their goof-up.
I agree with JDA, if the lights worked OK prior to the resto, grounds are the biggest problems, when it comes to trailer wiring...you'll figure it out...

Great Score on the cart and the Skeeter freebies!

Keep up the great progress,
Later,
GT

Re: 1984 Skeeter Champ 16' Restore

Uh oh, look who's back! :D

It's been a rough couple of months and not much work done to the boat in that time. Where I last left off, my son and I were building his Pinewood Derby car. He ended up taking 2nd in speed at the pack race and 5th in speed at District (which is very surprising due to the size of his car!). Here's his car, before putting on the wheels:
pwde.jpg

Anyway, after that I ended up having to have surgery on my wrist so that naturally put me out of commission for just about everything for a few weeks. After that, my wife and I decided to spend a week in The Bahamas (it was our honeymoon cruise). A week later and here I am! My wife has to have a surgery the first of April, so I'm not back 100%, but I am back and working!

Before my surgery, I dropped of my prop to be machined and I picked up my wiring harness that was made for me. I also resolved my trailer wiring problem (somehow the ground pin on the pigtail broke off). After the break, I decided to pick back up with the cap, starting from the front. I cleaned it all off (the first time I've seen it since starting the project! HA!) and assessed the situation.

Unfortunately, the core of the deck was rotten enough to where it needed to be replaced. On the flip side, I was planning on pulling it anyway. The boat originally had a single hatch up front that left a lot to be desired. So much wasted space! I couldn't leave this alone. I cut out around the perimeter and pried the wood core away from the top (the 'glass top was thick enough that I decided I would re-use it). After pulling it away, I realized there really wasn't that much wasted space... but still enough to warrant some access redesign.

In these two pictures, you can see where the old access hatch was located, as well as where the two seat posts were located. The black bar you see around the middle is where the bow the of the hull meets the sole of the deck. Anything ahead of the bar (towards the bow) is above the level of the sole, so it's pretty much unusable space in terms of using the deck as the storage base.
20120320194918573.jpg

20120320194938937.jpg

I've been thinking up ideas on how to best maximize space and this is currently what I have in mind.
castdeck.jpg

For the section of the deck that is ahead of the black bar (the 'unusuable' space), the middle box is going to be for a recessed trolling motor tray. To the left and right of that will be some "mini-storage" boxes. I'm thinking I will directly mold in a fiberglass box large enough to hold tackle or a clear box or two. I'm pretty sure they will be much smaller than they appear on my drawing, but you get the idea. I'm still not 100% on these boxes, though, because I'm not sure how it is going to impact the strength of the deck. I don't want to step down on the lid and my leg break through, ya know.

For the section behind the black bar, I am going to get rid of the rear seat post (I don't believe I have ever used it) and extend the center access hatch back while at the same time pinching the center hatch in on the sides. This is because I am going to add a hatch to the left and right of it. These two side hatches will actually extend up closer to the black bar than what the drawing shows. If I end up getting rid of the idea of the front built-in boxes, then I will extend these two hatches up even further. Unlike current bass boats, I'm not making each access hatch it's own compartment. It will still be one large open storage underneath, but I will have more access to it, thus making more the space visible/usable.

Now for the question part of this post. My main concern is going to be how do I tie the new wood in to the cap to where it will be structurally sound? Would I simply use the cutout as a template, cut a new piece of ply (and wrap it in 'glass as per the normal guidance of course), 'glass the cutout back onto it, and then tab it back to the top cap from above and below?
