1984 Volvo AQ 125A Carb/Fuel problem?

Hello,
I have a 1984 Bayliner Capri w/Volvo AQ125A engine with a stock setup. Just got it back from the shop for a check up and everything checks ok (Starts right up with no problem at the dock which is unusual). I usually have to start it a few times and allow it time to warm up. The engine in or out of drive idles fine. As I increase the amount of throttle when in drive, runs fine until I pass 1/3 max throttle. Not enough to get up on plane. The engine starts to die out. I called The Shop and they told me that they checked the fuel and it was fine while it was there for the check up. Noticed smoke from the carb when the engine died out. I don't smell gasoline. If I back off the throttle the engine will return to normal (won't cut off). If I try to increase the throttle quickly to %75 or more all at once to get up on plane the engine raises in response for a few seconds before it tries to cut out again. The carb was cleaned 3 seasons ago and a fuel water separator was added. I did notice that the year before the engine would attempt to bog down for a split second... I plan on replacing the fuel water separator first. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated!

sounds like you're on the right track with the fuel.......when the fuel/water separator was added, was the stock fuel filter removed? Might be clogged. Doesn't serve much purpose of it's still there. JMO

Fuel pump might be going. Check all the fuel lines for cracking.

As I read it, your problem is just quick acceleration? Otherwise, can you still reach WOT?

I Agree, sounds like a fuel problem. I'd pour a can of SEA-FOAM into the gas and run it for a while. This will probably fix your problem or at least eliminate the fuel. You can also try heet. With the SEA-FOAM, you can slowly pour directly into your carberator. GOOD STUFF! I'm a firm believer in this stuff and use it in all my vehicles including my boat. Hope this helps!

Tbear,
I didn't know that there was a stock filter. Don't know where it is located. I will check all of the fuel lines for cracking. No, I haven't been able to reach WOT. Keeps bogging down and shutting off.

Can someone tell me how to properly put muffs on. I heard that there was an intake hole at the bottom of the drive I needed to plug up after putting the muffs on. Is that true and with what could I properly plug it?

I bought some yesterday and will try the sea-foam in the gas and a little down the Carb.

A word of warning. The SEA-FOAM will smoke quite a bit, so you may want to move it somewhere with plenty of ventilation. It will disapate and finally clear up. Again, with the engine running, keep a constant but very slow pour directly into the carburator. I'd use about 1/2 can this way and pour the remaining into your gas tank. This will clean your carburator, valves and any other carbon build-ups it comes in contact with....Good Luck!

Yes, there is a 3rd intake hole. I have been told a dowel or a tip of a caulk tube works, but I never got them too. I pull the prop and submerge the lower unit in a tub/barrel, being sure side intakes are covered. It will warm your engine up faster......FYI! (I have NEVER overheated doing this [hell, I don't even have a thermostat in my engine] Watch your gages, though)

If the drive is dry, duct tape should work also. Watch for water exiting the flapper on the cavitation plate to ensure good water flow.

As far as a fuel filter, I have one book that refers to it, and another doesn't mention one. I have not had a fuel problem in 3 years, so I don't fix what's not broken. Of course, an aftermarket inline filter could easily have been installed. Since you have the separator, I doubt any inline filter was installed, though.

There is, however, a fine screen filter behind the accelerator pump check valve (also called the accelerator jet, depending the resource) This can clog. Since you have an "acceleration problem" I am betting it's your carb. The accelerator pump is as good as any place to start.

Don S would be the expert here, along with others, I am sure. I'm a noob on this Forum, and defer to their expertise.

don't use additives in the fuel it will mess with the accellerator pump in the carb it is a diaphram which can be eaten away you are gettinbg too much air adjust the air fuel mixture 1 and 1/4 turnes you are not setting the timing enough to advance. check the" spring "below the distributor plate it is a static advance about 30 degrees before 4200 rpm it should increase to about 32-36 degrees

Had the same problem a few years back. Had the carb rebuilt and that solved the problem.
