You haven't even looked at a manual yet, let alone read it and understand how things work have you?

It looks simple enuff. 6 bolts

Remove those 6 bolts, report back what you find.

Have you ever visited the Volvo section of the Adults only sticky? It's the second post in this forum.

I asked this earlier, did you ever look at the Volvo information in the Adults only sticky????

The sealing ring you're talking about isn't intuitively obvious from the manuals or the parts lists. It's number 19 the parts drawing here: http://www.volvopentastore.com/Connecting-Components-Aq-Drive-Unit-270/dm/*******.562109716--**********.796484448--store_id.366--view_id.317190

You need to pull the outdrive and the engine in order to remove the transom shield.

It's possible that the seal wasn't replaced five years ago. Anything's possible with a 25 year old boat but the most likey reason for the leakage is that the transom is soft and the bolts aren't holding the transom shield tight to the hull anymore. If the transom is soft, further tightening of the carrige bolts will just squeeze more water out of the wood. The caulk you see was most likely applied as a stop gap measure to slow down the leakage.

You absolutely MUST do a thorough inspection of the transom to determine it's condition. If it's rotted and soft then you're going to be makng a few decisions as to what you think the hull and your time are worth. You're not the first one to be in this position. I went through it last year.

Edit: Another thought on sealing the transom shield to the hull - the carriage bolts each have an o-ring between the shield and the hull. The holes are outside the seal discussed above so those o-rings seal between the bolt holes and the hull. Just another thing to consider.

If the transom has caulk 90% the problem is already there :( You can check it out yourselve also, Take a hammer and hit the transome from top to bottom, if it sounds dull, there is rot. Poke with a screwdriver on the inside lower section of the transom and dont fool yourselve if you find rot.
Common thing on older boats, thats why they sell cheap!

Ayuh,... So you've already got the drive off, the motor out,+ the transom assembley out of the hull,..??

You won't SEE the Problem until you Do...

It still can be positive as long as you can keep the water out from entering, altho rot an not be stopped. Check the transom for flatness if it is bolded the transom house can not seal properly flat. Replace the transom bolt washers on the outside there must be a seal washer in between, re-seal with kit do this on all the bolts then retorque them, remove all the caulck and properly clean the edge all around the transom house to transom. Roughen it up degrease properly and re-seal with a nice beam of kit, no silicone! (I always use $$ sika pu adhesive, dunno the number) You might be lucky when you remove the transombolts that you can pry the house some distance from the transom to clean and re-seal behind also. let it dry out properly.

That is NOT how you fix anything.
That is a cheap bandaid fix at best to maybe get you through a weekend.

Re: 1984 Volvo Penta Outboard leaking.

EVERYBODY wants a quick inexpensive fix, they also want it to last forever and be safe and as good as new. He wants his boat to run like it's supposted to. Now, with your hack job recommendation he better be putting in a couple extra bilge pumps and look in that bilge several times a trip, because he is fixing nothing. He is covering up a problem.
You posted a cover up, not a fix. and I hope he understands exactly what your recommendations are.

I still wonder if he really knows the difference between a solid sound and a dull sound on checking the transom. I doubt he does.
