The carb starts dripping water, you sure it isn't fuel? Sounds like a carb service is in order if it's dripping gas, needle and seat probably not working, could be blocked up.

Can you elaborate a little on "hard to start" could just be your starting procedure. How does it run at other speeds ??

Don't see how it can drip water unless you've got water in your gas, or you've got such a bad water tube grommet leak that water is being pumped up into the exhaust ports and out the carb. Base gasket could be bad as well as the tube grommet and the only way to fix is to pull the powerhead and install a new base gasket/grommet. Are you getting water in the lower spark plug? Pull it out and tap the plug on a surface. Since it's an 85, if the grommet has never been replaced chances are it's destroyed as all the other ones i've ever pulled are.

Re: 1985 9.9 help please

I had that sort of thing happen to my car once. I was running really sluggish like the fuel pump was failing. Then I lifted the hood the carb. was ice cold, even had frost forming on it. My solution was to shut the car off and give it ten minutes and the carb. warmed up and it never happened again. I was telling a buddy about it and he was familiar with the condition and said airplane carbs. can do the same thing and they have a heater in them to prevent it. I wish I could remember what he said but I can't. I would make certain your slow speed needle is set correctly but first I would service the carb. I do believe what your saying though! Best of luck. Rick.

Yeah it's called carb ice.

as air flows through the carb it flows through a venturi in the throat, accelerating the air and dropping the pressure, that combined with the fuel atomization drop the temperature to a point that on a humid day ice can form in the throat, humid days around the 40's-50's seem to be the worst.
in an airplane you pull a carb heat lever and some air is redirected over the exhaust to heat it and melt the ice, but you lose performance so it's not left on all the time
sorry, back on topic
