Check ebay for air conditioners. It is a risk but I bought my last one there and it was cold as ice and worked until I sold the boat. My little Century needs one now. I had problems starting my compressor with a Honda gen I installed a quick start cap and it was all good after that.

thanks proshadetree, I'll check out ebay and see what I can find.

As for filling the gap at the stern......Ya think "trex" decking type material would work? I don't think there is any lateral strain on anything there, its just compressive force from the screws joining the cap and hull..
Any thoughts?

Sure sounds feasible to me. I don't think much in the way of adhesive sticks to that stuff though so all your fastening will need to be mechanical.

I wonder if PL will stick to it? PL sticks to just about everything....lol
There are plenty of screws across there to hold it if I can't glue it also.

btw, oops mentioned using "sikka flex" for caulking up the gap after I install the wood or trex stuff.
I saw several different "sikka" brand products at lowes and homedepot....which one do I need?

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

Well crap, the mystery deepens...
I removed the rubber to start taking off the rubrail. Not happy with what I found. What I thought were rivets...ARE IN FACT RIVETS with corresponding holes in the hull. The rivets are broke off pretty much flush which is why I couldn't poke thru the holes. I also discovered several screws BEHIND the rubrail attaching the cap to the hull. The rubrail actually has small 1/4"ish threaded bolts and I'm assuming nuts on the inside.(they just spin) I'll have to wait for my kid to get home from school to have him climb in there and hold a wrench to get the rubrail off.
Could the rivets have gone thru the rotted wood and corroded away? Was the hull actually closer to the cap at one time and something happened?
What the hell is going on here......

nothing appears bent or warped out of shape, but something is obviously screwy here.....Did bayliner assemble the boat like this?????
Here are some pictures of the overall stern area and a close up of the corner section where the gap across the stern starts.
Anybody know what is up????

On an even crappier note: the generator I picked up has rust in the gas tank. It still runs and the carb cleaned up ok but will have to address the fuel tank somehow. Oh joy..

I am with you something don't look right. How far around the boat is the screws and bolts? Has the cap ever been off? What condition is the bow in? There has to be some answers lurking in the hull some where

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

I haven't pulled the insert all the way around to check how the RR is attached in other areas.
To my knowledge the cap hasn't been removed, but who knows.....

The bow has no damage, in fact the rubrail and cap/hull joint all around appears nice and snug, its just a gap at the stern.

i'm wondering if i'll be able to pull the two back together....it's quite a large gap at 1" or so across the stern.

Well....this is really turning into a sh**ty week!
Went out to begin work removing the rubrail from the stern. I caught one of the damn swim platform brackets and put a deep gouge in my elbow. I kept ahead working but the bleeding didn't stop.
I now have 3 stitches and a fancy bandage.

Along with a boat cap and hull that don't line up.

Man I am sorry. That su&^ . I hope you can find a reason for this gap. I just dont see Baylinner doing that. I just looked at a 88 Victoria today and the transom looked as good as the rest of the boat. No gap at all.

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

I'm going to attempt to pull the two together. I'm leaning toward the idea that the original rivets broke loose, possibly what prompted the transom replacement, and then some previous owner repaired the transom and didn't really fix the hull/cap joint properly.
I'm really hoping I can get the two joined again!!
I will remove the rubrail and all screws/bolts. Then reinsert a bunch of the bolts and see how close I can close the gap by cranking down slowly on all the bolts. I'll get pics of the process and results when I get it done. It would be really cool if I could pull them back together. Maybe I'll wait til the weekend cause this week is just bad luck for me.
Oops mentioned using "sikkaflex" to seal the gap.....Which product do i need? there were several different "sikka" products. I think it would be considerably cheaper than 4200 considering I might need quite a bit. I may go ahead and pull/reseal the whole rub rail. I like to make things more involved than needed.lol

Edit: What about Pl? I have that. I don't see why it wouldn't work?? I don't plan to take it apart again. Pl just for the seam between the parts. something else for "caulk"

Not saying this is your issue, but we had an early Grady White with similar gaps at MULTIPLE spots on the hull. Sealed from the factory with caulk. Don't know if the parts moved in the molds, or if the factory just didn't try hard enough to line 'em up.

sorry cant help you with your hull but advice for cleaning you gen set fuel tank.take the tank off, pour out the fuel, get some nuts, ball bearings anything that will knock the rust loose throw them in the tank and shake like mad. works awsome on dirt bikes old metal gas tanks. sorry to hear about the mis-alignment of your hull

Thanks for that tip johnmorgan!!!! I'm going to go try that now. Unfortunatly, the carb is shot I think. New one is only 100 tho, not too bad. It does run but....like crap. It keeps flooding and fuel pouring out of carb. Adjusting float does no good.

Ok I went and looked at my Baylinner cuddy. I can stick my pinky in the gap between the transom and cap. It is sealed with a white calk. Pried some out and plywood. Sorry man did not cap my boat as there was no need to and I dont think I ever even noticed this before. So yes it is possible that that gap is factory.

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

Alright guys, sorry for the delay.
I got the rub raill off and the bolts and screws removed.
I can push the two pieces together in most areas, hull and cap touching! yay! However, the corners don't wanna go and I think it will crack something if I force it....any advice??? Please...
I will PL the two pieces together, use bolts behind the rubrail instead of the screws(which were loose as a goose). Let it dry a few days and then reattach rubrail with bolts also. Any problems with that?
Couple of questions:
What about the corners?
A gap will still exist there.....I'm unsure how to proceed.

2nd question: What alternatives to 4200 can I use to caulk the seam after re-installing the rubrail?

I have pics coming....

Here are pictures of the area:

This is the starboard corner, i'm concerned about the corners, they will NOT pull together snuggly. I started to hear some cracky type noises when I put pressure to join the two...I haven't cracked anything, YET! :D

This is mid-stern area pushed together, I can easily push the two together. It is only glass this far up on the stern, so it flexes easily

Here is a funny shot of the rub rail handing off the stern...

My cuddy has wood in the same spot as yours. I would replace that wood. angel cut it into the corners and apply sealant to the edges before you put it in. Thats how mine looks.
