Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

Thanks for the tips guys! Stupid me, I never thought to look at other types of boats.
I do suppose any rail that suits my needs will work. The hunt begins, I know a few boats in peoples yards been sitting there for years. May have to knock on some doors:D

I have a question:
Could a swim platform be constructed from two layers of 5/8" plywood laminated together, wrapped in a few layers of fiberglass, then painted?
I'm thinking i can use most of the original mounting hardware and brackets.

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

Went boating Friday and Saturday. Started working on her this morning. I'm moving the batteries to the starboard side and re-installing the freshwater tank and pump. I hadn't planned on using them, however, I miss having freshwater to cook and clean dishes etc.....
So, its going back in. I have a question regarding the pump. It appears someone has installed a switch directly at the pump and also one near the galley sink. Can I eliminate one of these? (the one at the pump). and just use one switch to turn it on? The original wiring was wired so the switch at the pump was a "master". Meaning, the galley switch did nothing unless the switch at the pump was on.....Seems odd to me.
What do you guys think???
I've attached some pics of the pump and close up of switch, along with a shot of the tank reinstalled and batteries relocated. I still have to screw down the battery switch. (i think i'm going to make a base for it out of some plywood)

Also, can a riser bolt be used as a battery ground? One of my negative cables is too short to reach the block. No big deal if I have to buy a new cable, but the existing one WILL reach a riser bolt. Its bolted to the block.....

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

Also, still looking for advice on painting the ABS swim platform after all the repairs are completed. I've got the platform off of the boat again to finish up repairs and paint it.
Any advice on paint to use?
I solved the electrical issues I asked about. I bought a longer ground cable and grounded to the block just to be safe. I also removed the switch from the waterpump and wired only the one switch in the galley area to control power to the pump. I am going to cut out a plywood base to mount the pump and a seperate one for the battery switch. I can glue the plywood to the new decks I put in, avoiding screwing holes into my new deck. I did however screw in the battery strap brackets and sealed holes with 4200. The brackets to retain the water holding tank will be screwed down and sealed up aslo. Just haven't done it yet. The tank must be removed to access the bolts for the swim platform.
Paint ideas please???
Something durable as everyone climbs in and out and steps all over it.

I'd imagine that Krylon Fusion or whatever the Rustoleum equivalent is that's specifically made for plastic would be pretty tough for beat for painting your swim platform.

I have that same freshwater pump and mine isn't on a separate switch. It's powered up anytime the battery master switch is on. The pump is activated by a loss in pressure. When a faucet is opened the pump runs. When you close the faucet the pump automatically turns off.

The second switch (by the pump) could have been a 'safety'- turn that one off when you winterize or drain the system so ya don't accidentally run the antifreeze out of the system or run the pump dry? Luhrs... Might think about putting a switch or accessible fuse somewhere you could pull for the reason stated above. Fwiw- my first Carver didn't have a water pump switch, had to pull the fuse, the current Carver and the old Bayliner have a switch.

Thanks ezmobee...I'll check out the krylon fusion type paint.

I left one switch in the galley for the water pump, I realize it operates based on pressure, but should a leak or something occur it'll be nice to be able to shut off power to the pump without shutting off all power to the boat. Plus, the switch in the galley is already there and wired. I just omitted the switch mounted on the pump.

Hoping to finish up swimplatform soon and get it back on the boat. I'm aiming to get it done in the next few days. I have bad aim tho.

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

Alright guys....
I stopped by lowe's today and picked up Valspar spraypaint for plastic in gloss white. This will be used to paint the swimplatform. It says on the can "will not chip or peel" "bonds with plastics"..........I hope those aren't false claims.

I still have to address the several cracks in the platform. I was browsing in the epoxy section at the store thinking I would go that direction, however I noticed JB weld can used for "most plastics". I have JB weld. I think I may give it a shot.

The cracks are small (most an inch or so in length), I'm thinking I can fill the cracks with JB weld and let it set up. Sand smooth and paint.

Any input? Anyone use JB weld on plastic?

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

Here are some pics of the platform removed from the boat. Along with some close ups of the cracks. I mainly just want to keep the platform from breaking apart.

When I first removed the platform 3 of the top attachement bolts were missing/broke off. 1 had a regular carriage bolt in it. One a flat head wood screw plugging the hole of a broken bolt. (the nut was still attached to the busted bolt inside the transom)
I assume this is what caused the cracks.
I will be reinstalling the platform with backer plates on the thru transom bolts, as well as replacing the missing/incorrect bolts and slathering some 5200 on the brackets and bolts.

One pic shows a corner that has damage.....Not a huge deal, however is there a "filler" i can use to repair this? Again, not a big deal and I CAN live with it but if there is a fairly simple repair i can do....I'd like to.

Any thoughts on Jb welding the cracks? Would epoxy be better?

I filled the corner ding in the platform with some epoxy, I'm heading outside shortly to see how it turned out/sand it smooth (if it sticks)

As for the cracks, I haven't tried the JB weld yet. I'm hoping somone has experience with repairing ABS.
Anyone?

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

I couldn't resist. I slapped a couple coats of paint on the starboard side of the platform. I still have one crack on the bottom side to repair on this piece before painting the bottom side. The corner with the arrow pointing was the damaged corner I posted earlier. I filled with two-part "stick" epoxy and gave it a little sanding before painting.
The epoxy is too thick to mend the cracks but I think it may work for the little gouges and dings. This was my first "test" of the epoxy and paint. I have several other areas I will repair in this way. (with a bit more sanding for a better finish)
I'm thinking I will fill in the cracks with liquid epoxy glue.
Any objections? Any input? Anyone?

Ok, the cracks will be filled with plastic welding epoxy. I will let you guys know how it works.
I'm impressed with the spraypaint for plastic. It appears to adhere VERY well and gives a nice looking finish. I think the platform will look great when all completed. I will also report on how well the paint holds up over time.
Hopefully, I'll have the rest of the platform repaired, sanded down, and painted this weekend.

Oh, I also got in the rail fittings I ordered to construct the stern handrailing. Maybe I can get to that this weekend also.

Everyone have a good weekend! :)

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

I may be jumping ahead of myself with so many projects at once, however, I'd like to reseal the area at the stern where the topcap meets the actual hull. The gap in this area is roughtly 1". Its filled with what appears to be some type of white caulking but has a few holes and has degraded a good bit. What is the best material for the job?
4200 or similar would cost a ton with the large area that needs to be filled. Roughly 8' across the stern and 1"+ wide. Unsure how thick.

Could you post pic of that area? I think you are making a valiant effort trying to save your swim plat. Mine is similar and when she gives out I will just replace. I have considered a full plat made from plywood and glass like you considered earlier. I think opps made one I will just have to consider the holes left by the existing one. I know Jb weld sticks like mad to iron and copper but have not had much luck with plastic. Matter of fact I have never had much luck repairing anything made of plastic, may just be me though. If you want comments post more pics. Lot of baylinner threads lately. I love the things mine is a 88 1952 cuddy. Talking about haters I have the omc drive that I love which is a cobra. A baylinner with a omc what else could you hate. My personal experience is that all boats rot. Searay to Century. I have owned many in my life and repaired all of them due to water intrusion.

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

Thanks for the reply proshadetree. I realize i'm putting more into this platform than it's worth, however i don't have the money for a new one right now and it isn't in too bad of shape. I can live with it for a few years at least. (if the new paint holds up on it)

Here are the pics of the stern/cap joint I mentioned, again the gap is roughy 1" wide the entire width of the stern.
Let me know what you guys think.....

btw proshadetree,
A bayliner AND an OMC!!! Some folks would say you are doomed! lol
The way I look at it......its your/my boat, if you enjoy and are happy with it, that is all that matters.:)

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

Ideas for caulk or whatever for the stern section I posted earlier would be great. I can easily access it with the swim platform removed and would like to do this before reinstalling the platform.
Suggestions?

Appears to be typical bayliner build quality of your era.

you've got two options, let it go or do a full on resto with a cap removal.
