Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

New long block has shipped and is on the way to me! This weekend I pressure washed the bilge and it actually came pretty darn clean. I think I'm just going to leave it alone and forget re-gelcoating it.

I'll update with pics when i get going with the new engine. I'm getting excited!

Hey was hoping you help me out I am just starting to refurbish a 86 ciera sunbridge and your thread has given me tons of info already. I am looking for any manuals on the 275 and 225e. Outdrive and engine both purr but want to stay on top of things and get some stuff ordered. Also the steering is stiff and I am a pretty stout guy no way I can let te girlfriend drive. What are my options there. Thanks william

Sorry guys, my patience is wearing thin lately. I received the engine damaged and sent it back yesterday. The head was cracked and an exhaust valve spring broken from something falling on the top of the crate during shipping. I'm so frustrated. I just want my darn engine!

That sucks Jimmy! But I am glad you noticed before you put it in and got it all ready to go. So are they responsible for the shipping now, back n forth? We still got some time before season starts to get it done.

Yes sir, the engine shop is standing behind everything and paying shipping both ways (as they should)
I hope to get the long block back in a week or so and get my boat in the water!

Alright guys.... I have the long block in the garage and have started assembling it. I'll get pics soon... I hope to have the engine back in the boat this weekend.
Seacas, i used california engines... I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

I have the engine nearly ready to go back in the boat!!!! I have pics but am so tired now, i'll upload some tomorrow.

I am a bit concerned though.....
The new engine will not turn over when I try to turn the harmonic balancer... I'm hoping this is just because it is new and "tight". I was able to turn the old one over with a fair amount of force... The new engine will NOT budge. I get a slight wiggle at the crank assembly but thats about it. I called the engine shop and they said its because it is new and they use VERY tight tolerances on everything. I sure hope they are right.
Pretty much all that is left is to install the flywheel and she is ready to hoist into the boat.
Oilpan, new oil pump, timing cover, manifolds, risers, water pump, impeller housing, all pulleys, alternator, starter, intake, thermostat housing, etc are all installed!!!!!!
i think I may have over done the rtv on the oil pan gasket(oozed out all over) but i'd rather it not leak. Other than that, the assembly went super smooth!

Over doing it with that rtv can lead to remnants in the oil pan and clogged oil pump ! I would start that motor on the floor before installation for pc, of mind before doing all that work and have to pull it

I plan to do that fat fanny.. I don't think I used THAT much rtv...just oozed from the edges a bit. (sucks to clean up that crap off your fingers!!)

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

I got more work done on the motor after a LONG day at the office....

I realized I forgot to order riser gaskets and assembled it with the old ones, OFF THEY CAME. I'm not risking ruining my new motor for a couple silly gaskets. The old ones were still in great shape which is likely why I didn't notice until it dawned on me I never ordered any. I was hooking up the plumbing hoses to the manifolds and risers and it finally clicked that I didn't put new gaskets in there. I'm hoping the local boat shop has them, otherwise, i'll have to order online and wait.... I hate waiting! I want the engine running this weekend!!!!!

I have a question: Is there a difference in temp sending unit and oil pressure sending unit for marine vs. auto? I bought new ones from o'reillys and wanna be sure I don't need "marine" for these...

Oh.... and I crimped the stupid dipstick tube trying to "tweak" it to fit properly. I'll have to get a new one of those also. bummer. While i'm at it I may replace the dipstick. The one from the old engine says FORD on it!!! WTF????? the length is perfect for the block and oilpan however so I was gonna use it but that Ford emblem on it bothers me. lol

Bow tie or cry! I always say. not sure on the sending units I would imagine as long as there brass you'll be fine. Try a real good hand sanitizer or alcohol on the rtv.

I got a new dipstick and tube...chrome ones even. lol Also, the local boat shop had the manifold to riser gaskets so I got those installed and the hoses all hooked up. I'm waiting on napa to get the bearing seals for the PDS in the flywheel housing. Should have them tuesday and hope to install them that evening.

MOTOR WILL BE IN THE BOAT THURSDAY! No exceptions. lol

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

Today, I got the pds bearings replaced. Easy job really. Pry the seals off, remove the retaining rings and drive the PDS out the back. Installed the aft bearing and its retaining ring and slid the PDS back in. Installed the front bearing and the retaining rings. I'm still waiting for the seals to come but the forward seal will be glued in place and the rear seal is installed backwards from how you'd think. The one I removed wasn't like this but everything i'm reading says that the aft seal in installed in the non-conventional direction.

The motor is basically ready to install in the boat and I hope to get that done thursday evening. I've got a friend coming to help with the lift and install.

Here are some pics of the new long block...

The valve covers didn't get painted but I can live with it. I still haven't had a chance to bump the motor over with starter. The stand I have won't allow the flywheel to fit. I'm going to hang it from the hoist and install the flywheel, then lower it down onto some wood blocks and crank it over to confirm TDC and mark off the balancer. Do they make a sticker or something I could place on the balancer for timing marks?
