The new engine is alive and running!!! Had her out at the lake Saturday and Sunday. I ended up having to get a new HTGR starter to crank the new engine.. the old one just wouldn't spin her fast enough. I installed the new starter and it came to life after about 5 seconds of cranking. I ran it for 30minutes at 2k rpm as per the builders instructions for cam follower break in. I then changed the oil and headed to the lake!!!

The new engine runs smooth at anything over 1,000 rpm....below that it sputters and dies. I tried adjusting throttle linkage a bit with no success. The engine just doesn't want to idle. In or out of gear.

The carb is a rochester quadrajet.... it worked on the previous motor and had no issues idling.

The high rpm needed to keep it running isn't good for the drive... slamming it into gear. I need to figure out this idle issue.
The carb has been sitting in the shed for a few months during the repower. Perhaps its just clogged up?

Any suggestions???

With the entire engine being new, or close, I would either replace the carb, or at the very least rebuild her. It's short work compared to what you have already done.

Thanks guys! The carb will get replaced soon. I'm out of "boat funds" at the moment after the repower. I'm going to remove the current carb and give her a thorough cleaning and see if that doesn't help the idle issue. It was sitting in the shed for months during the repower and likely got clogged up or something. (wishful thinking)

You can do the carb rebuild yourself by following youtube videos. Or have someone else do it. I had mine done for $125 plus parts.
I agree you should go through it, You don't want an old dirty carb damaging the new motor. And now damaging your outdrive!

Glad you've got it running!!! to bad the lakes are still frozen or you could be out cruising.:grumpy:

When I replaced my engine the carb had been sitting for a very long time. It was an AQ231B engine that had not been winterized. I had to clean the carb several times, dis-assemble, soak and spray with air. The fuel I had freshly put in, "washed" the fuel tank and managed to stir up a lot of sediment that made it past the filter and into the carb. My solution was to add 10 gallons of fresh fuel, some sea foam fuel treatment, and run 2 fuel filters, as they clogged replace them. AFTER that 10 gallons of fuel, I did the seafoam fuel treatment stuff, and 1 filter, no issues. I think if I had the ability to rinse the tank, syphon the fuel out, and rinse again, it would have avoided the need to run multiple filters and multiple iterations of cleaning the carb.

Each time I had to take the carb apart, you could see the off spec fuel seperation, sediment, and it had a different color, more orange than the yellow. Probably could have put out a fire instead of create one with that stuff.

Thanks for all the tips guys! I ran some seafoam with the fuel and soaked the carb over night in cleaner. Its running better and at a lower RPM but still not quite right. The idle is still high and she wants to die when I put in gear at the lower rpm.
The carb will be replaced when the funds become available. Hopefully in the next week or two.

Insult to injury last weekend....

I had the boat at the lake for some R & R and to try and resolve the high idle issue... it still won't idle below about 900rpm. It just dies if I try to back off below that. It also wants to die when I put it in gear...even at the higher rpm???

Well, from slamming into gear at high rpm... I sheered off the propeller cone retaining bolt and the cone and prop sank to the bottom of the lake!!!!! Luckily I had powered to a cove to anchor and used power to set the anchor. After lunch, we decided to go for a cruise. I fired her up, pulled up the anchor and was ready to go! NOT!!!! I put it into gear and didn't get the "thunk" or any propulsion at all. I thought to myself..."the shift linkage cotter pin broke". (its happened before) NO SUCH LUCK. I tilted the drive up and the prop shaft was staring me in the face.

I have a cheapo solas spare prop but that stupid prop cone and bolt is $60 alone. The OEM volvo prop at the bottom of the lake is $450. I am diving until I find that darn thing!!!! Its in about 9ft of water and I gps marked the anchor spot I was in. I'm thinking get a bunch of buddies out there using the spare prop, load em up with beer and dive goggles and have an afternoon propeller hunting party.

I'm really trying to make light of all this crap, but my patience is wearing VERY thin after all this trouble and money. I just want my boat to run right. Grrr.

I purchased and installed a new marine quadrajet carb. New motor is running great now.....except for a bog when I try to go above about 4k rpm. I've been reading that I may need to adjust the secondary air door "tension"??? Anyone have any tips?

So for your windows how did the 3m superduty outdoor tape hold up so far, windows leak? I am going to do my windows on the same boat but dont wantto spend the money on the recommended tape.

John, I used 4200 on my cabin windows. Scraping off all the old crap was the toughest part of the job.
My windows used double sided tape on the inside seam also, dunno how your are attached.
I used 3m superduty outdoor tape and those things aren't going anywhere. I did that before I started this thread... They leaked, it was actually the first thing I did when I got the boat.

I've got the whole platform back on the boat. Crappy pic but its back on!!! I've got to reattach the ladder and also bolt all three pieces together (2 bolts)....... but its basically done.
Mark42, thanks for the reply! I've never used the boat life products tho I've heard great things..I'll have to check it out. 5200 is great stuff.....just sucks to work with. The package says 7 days for full cure, so that is what I'll go with. Guess I'm taking the little boat fishing!

I finished up attaching the platform with 5200 and managed to not make such a mess this time!! Still a little mess...but not bad. That stuff just "oozes" everywhere and your srewed if you get it on your hands and don't notice. Then proceed to grab your freshly painted swim platform your working on! lol
Nevertheless! the platform is on, bolts sealed, and she ain't going anywhere for a long time. Just what I wanted.

I'm back guys.... Been hard working at school and work and haven't had time to post...
I'm getting ready to pull the outdrive and replace the entire reverse latch mechanism. Also replacing bellows and necessary drive seals as I go.

I'll get pictures and stuff of the job as I go.

Hello everyone! Been away for a few years but finally back to working on the boat. I will have pictures coming shortly but many big projects going on! Transom and engine mounts being replaced. Engine is out and at machine shop for a once over while I redo the engine bay. I would also like to build a swim platform to replace the crappy 3 piece thing that these year bayliners had.

Ive done several smaller projects in the last few years. Replaced dash, new captains chair, etc...

Here is the gantry I built and the engine coming out. My buddy being a spotter. Lol This was a week or so ago that I pulled the engine and took to machine shop for a once over. The rebuilt engine I put in a few years back only has about 50hrs but never able to resolve the intake issue. It would never seal no matter what I did. They are going to look at the heads and intake to see what the issue is. Engine ran great but wouldn’t idle below about 1000rpm because of intake leak
