1985 Rampage Question

i'm looking at a 1985 rampage 25' center console. it has a 350 marine power sport pac engine, a volvo penta outdrive with double props, trim tabs, t-tops w/ rod holders, bow dodger, vinyl enclosure for the center console, ratheon radar, chart plotter, fish finder, (not sure how old the electronics are). the engine looks super clean, has the closed system set up on it. not sure if it runs or not (i havn't been able to talk to the owner yet the boats at someone elses house). it's on a karavan trailer with surge brakes, the rollers need to be replaced.

i've read on here about the "slampage" and problems in down seas with these boats. i also read on here that a double prop and trim tabs take care of these issues.

i'm looking for some more info or opinions on this boat. the price is pretty good, and i like the setup and how stable it seems. i know i have some work to do cosmetically and more than likely some mechanical work to get everything operational. i'm just looking for some input on it, good or bad.

thanks in advance
bill

Re: 1985 Rampage Question

Thats a great offshore boat. You will need every bit of that hp and duo prop to push her. She is a big old heavy boat. I will answer a couple of yur questions from your original post.

The downsee issue is more operator than seas. Though this boat I believe has a tapered/variable deadrise with not much in the stern. But it has a very deep v for its size and a very good bow flair. Head seas will be cake for your boat. The tabs should be up in a following sea and adjusted as neccesary in a head sea. I use to lust after these boats when I saw them on the water. Share some more interior pics if you will.
The volvo with the duo prop is a definate plus all around. Sounds like she is rigged pretty well, though alot of it may need updating.

As far as specs on her, good luck. You may try this place, but not sure they have your year/model boat. http://www.boatingwithdawsons.com/

Also check with Rampage, not sure if its run by the same people as it use to be, but call them and they might be able to help, www.rampageyachts.com

Good luck and keep us posted on what you do with her.

Re: 1985 Rampage Question

i may have a stuck motor. if i do what os the going rate for a 5.7 mercruiser? not sure if its a bad starter or a stcuk engine. have a wicked clunk when i try to turn it over. engine seems like it was pickled before it was put away, oil still in under the valve covers and the carb seemed like it was wet with gas when i first looked at it. the fun begins!!!!

Depends on if it is a rebuild or new. Can range anywhere from 1500 to 10G. Depends on how much hp etc you want. They are not all created equal. If you have questions like that you may want to start a rebuild thread for your boat or a different thread so you get more answers. Good luck.

Ayuh,... Pull the drive to see if it's the drive or the motor...

Re: 1985 Rampage Question

i pulled some plugs today, the #5 cylinder had water pour out of it when i took the plug out. the others were ok but did have a touch of rust on them. looks like a long block will be in order. i still put the mystery oil to it and will give it a few days, but i think either way a new engine is the safest bet.

where should i post a rebuild thread? i am gonna need all the feedback i can get to limp this along.
