The 'other' boat I bought

The 'other' boat I bought

Just thought I'd post a pic of the other boat I just bought. It's a 1985? Savage Pacific 5.1m half cabin with 70HP Johnson. Runs like a dream!

I spent the day today cleaning it up and rubbing it back with some 1200 wet and dry... Looks OK i reckon.

18-10-2012 - Adding cleats and glueing/screwing in part of the deck

18-10-2012 - Adding cleats and glueing/screwing in part of the deck

I spent about 4 hours on the boat today. In the morning I added cleats to the stringers, I used PL adhesive and stainless steel screws. I sealed the screws with 3m 5200. I covered them in it 1st then covered the tops of them after I screwed them in to make sure they were totally covered/sealed. It was a bit messy and I think I may have had to much on them. In the afternoon I got the back and middle pieces of the deck in the boat. I covered the stringers and cleat tops with adhesive, filled the gaps on top of a few of the support beams at the deck seams with PB and put the deck on top and lined it up etc. The screw holes were pre-drilled and the screws covered in 3m 5200 before putting them in. It was so good to have most of the deck in.

Tomorrow I hope to get the front piece in and then PB the whole deck to the hull where it meets it.

I do have a question on under deck foam before I glass it. When I pulled everything out of it there was no flotation foam etc under the deck at all. Should I put some in? I kinda feel like it should have some?

Cheers,

-X-

I would use the Blue or Pink Slab foam sold @ Lowe's or Home Depot. Cut to fit and layed in the hull.

Thing is,,,just putting some foam in the boat does not really make sense unless you figure it out and put the right amount in. Each cubic foot of foam will float about 60 lbs of weight when it is submerged. The purpose of the foam is to keep the boat and motor, battery, gear, people afloat in a catastropic event. Unless you do the calculations to find out how much everything weighs and then to find out how much those same things weigh when submerged because everything will displace some water. For example your motor might weigh 300lbs but when submerged it displaces some water and you might need to only account for 250lbs. Whats the point? If you don't have enough or more than enough flotation to keep the boat afloat your just wasting money. It will sink anyway. To little flotation of any type won't help you. Now if your also looking for level flotation to go along with basic flotation that's a whole nuther ball game. Now the flotation need to be put in the proper places to keep the boat level when it goes down. Typically that means some flotation need to be up high, more needs to be near the engine than in the bow, etc. Designing boats to meet the US Coast Guard regs for basic and level flotation is no easy task. We actually sink the first boat of a new model in a test tank and then even move lead weights around to simulate passenger positions. Certainly just putting the foam under the deck could provide basic flotation, but only if enough (not likely). Putting foam only under the deck will also make the boat roll over in a heartbeat if it sunk. To get an idea how much foam think about a 5gal plastic pail. The full pail is actually less than a cubic foot. Think about floating 2000lbs submerged weight for example. That would take more than 35, 5 gal pails. IMHO just putting "some" flotation foam in is a total waste of money. Unless you do the weights and calculations to know how much you need of course.

Re: 18-10-2012 - Adding cleats and glueing/screwing in part of the deck

Most, Not all, but most, boats under 20 ft will have approx. 20-30 cubic ft of space under the deck. Filling this space with foam will allow floatation for 1000 - 2000 lbs. Boats of this size range unless overpowered with to big of a motor, will fall into this weight class. The Pour in foam ensures that every nook and cranny under the deck gets foamed. With some time and effort you can get almost the same effect using the slab foam. You do not get the advantages of the pour in foam acting as a "Glue" and adding structural integrity to the boat.

Thanks for the information George and Wood. I have decided to just add some slab foam. My thoughts are that I've added it to mainly fill a void space that can now not fill with water.

20-10-2012 - Foam / Bow deck / PB all deck

20-10-2012 - Foam / Bow deck / PB all deck

Today I spent about 2 hours on the boat. I wanted to get more done but it was so HOT! it think it was about 37 C which is about 96 F. The slow kick PB was turning to jelly within 10 minutes. I had to make up 4 batches of it just to seal/glue the deck edges in.

In the morning I went to bunnings and got some slab foam to fill under the deck with. It's not totally filled but 95+% of it is. The main reason for me doing it was to fill the air void and make it an area that water cant fill. If I get a hole in the bottom of the hull it's pretty unlikely that the boat will sink. If it's catastrophic and its the side of the hull who knows. It's better then was there before and the boats not a major asset so it wouldn't cripple me financially to replace it. It's better that was there before given there was nothing I guess. I am sure this is a point that can be debated.

After I put cut the foam and put it in I then put the last piece of the deck in. Screwed it down with stainless steel screws covered in 3M 5200 as with the others. Next I PB'd the deck to the hull around the whole deck. I probably should have waited for a cooler day or late in the afternoon to do it.

23-10-2012 - Sand hull back in prep for deck glassing

23-10-2012 - Sand hull back in prep for deck glassing

I had a couple of days off the boat repairs and took out the other one I have for a fish with some mates and kids on his birthday. Caught plenty of fish, just no keepers sadly. Kids enjoyed themselves though, Well my 2 year old didn't for a bit when Dad told her to give the speckeled snapper a pat she caught and it bit her on the finger!

So today I went and bought some more supplies. I needed another drum of resin and some measuring cups etc. After talking with the boat builder/repairer at the new fiberglass place i found just around the corner I decided to go with some vinyl ester resin for the glassing in of the deck. From what I have been told it will stick to the plywood deck better and a few other things. Sooo.. did I make the right choice?.... it was about 1/3 more expensive than the poly that I had been using.

I spent an hour in the afternoon sanding back the flowcoat on the inside of the hull back about 150mm from the edge of the new deck to give the glass for the deck something good to adhere to. I used a flap wheel on the grinder for this. I find it works very well.

24-10-2012 - Glassing in the deck

24-10-2012 - Glassing in the deck

Today I spent a few hours on it. First up I cut off the lips from the seat boxes under the cabin with the multi-tool. These tools are hands down the best thing for cutting things off close to flush. I then sanded them down flat to the hull with the flap wheel on the grinder. After vacuming it out 3 times I then got out the roll of 450GSM CSM.

I am going to put down two layers of the 450GSM on the deck. So first I cut out a peaice for the deck near the bow. I made it so it overlapped the deck edge by about 3-4 inches. I then cut out a second piece that overlapped the 1st one by about 3-4 inches. I did this for the next two sections of the boat heading towards the transom. It all went in ok. I had one prob where I accidently stepped on it when it was wet which made a bit of a mess of things but I fixed it up easily.

HEY MATE!

Great to get a reply from a fellow Aussie. I to sit here with a coldie, a TED TBH reading the forums and readin the forums and reding the forums... dam, too much Toheeys!. That sure sounds like an Xfile moment. Do I dare ask what car you drive or where ya live?????

Mine needs a lot of work. Well actually, i'd like to think it needed a lot of work. Ahh nah, too many stubbies.... it still does. Now I've most of the stringers/deck replacement done. I can't help but re-design the dash and other things...

Having the savage makes me feel i've got more time I guess.

Thanks so much for your reply!

Cheers.

25-10-2012 - More Glassing in the deck

25-10-2012 - More Glassing in the deck

I spent an hour or so on it today. I got the rear of the deck glassed in with two layers. I need to add a little more glass to the area's either side of the fuel tank bay under the splash well. It went pretty well. no air bubble. Did seem to use a fair bit of resin on the 1st layer, the 2nd one not so much as I put the 2nd layer on while it was still wet.

Re: 1985 v150 Nautiglass Sportsman restoration

Great write up mate. I'm in Sydney doing exactly the same rebuild with my Nauti V150 1/2 cabin.
Everything you have done so far mirrors what I've done with the exception of the fiberglass resin. I'm using epoxy which, in hindsight, I probably could have saved a heap going with poly. I'll be subscribing to this thread to watch your progress.

We're down in Vic, near Seymour,
have a early 80 series and a AU S11 ( the cook's jalopy )
both are white with black tyres LOL to show MY support for the GREATEST AFL team on the planet
http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/
( did that just to p%^s of the missus, if she wanders in here, Nth Melb are such a pack of sheilas LOL )

l take it you're in NSW?
couple of days ago...before seeing your thread... ordered the same 64 metre roll of 'glass, freaky huh?
should be enough left over for the next project boat, l can see her rolling her eyes now!,

anywho, you're making more progress than l am atm but it IS snapper season but l do need to pull my finger out if it..the savage.. is gonna get re-launched on the planned 26th Jan at Eildon,
got a lot to do before then..trailer, donk, stringers, floor, transom, seats, wiring, steering, paint...must be nuts l reckon

my Nautigirl is an '81 vintage, the older style..no sexy, curved dash or windscreen... with a 70 Johno,
dunno for sure yet what l'm gonna put on the savage, there is a 120 Chrysler..don't laugh..here that l could buy but l also don't mind 6 cylinder mercs...maybe it's just the Tower of Power manly nickname l like!

plenty of Nautiglass owners around..like badltr LOL

I think the nautiglass will be around for anther 30 years, they can't be killed it seems. LOL
I'm pretty sure they were made near Newcastle as a budget priced boat to lure families. Didn't come with too many bells or whistles, but that suited many buyers. The Fiberglass suppliers I go to have an employee who had quite a bit to do with the manufacturing, so he has been a wealth of knowledge in my rebuild.

I've got a thousand pics of my rebuild ( no, not an exaggeration). Ill get around to posting them somewhere one day.

Hi badtlr, Great to see another nautiglass owner on the forums. Thanks for posting. There is not a great deal of information on them about. Your correct with the no bells and whistles comment. I hope to add a few with my restoration and modifications. Put a thread up on here and show us some photo's of your rebuild.

I am currently trying to sort out what I want to do with the dask of the boat. I dont like the current look and the missus would like a bit more shade up the front.... I'd like t get the marine radio/tuner, Fish finder, switch board etc etc in there some how. I might end up cutting the whole dask out and remaking it. I have a spare sheet of plywood I bought for the floor that I could use....

Only spent an hour on her today. I cut off all the lip from the old seats and anchor well with the multi tool and measured up the replacement wood. I then cut the shapes from 12mm plywood and tested the fit. All good.

27-10-2012 - Sand Hull and glass the cabin anchor well and seats

27-10-2012 - Sand Hull and glass the cabin anchor well and seats

I spent a couple hours on it yesterday. First up I put a fresh 40 Grit flap wheel on the grinder and proceeded to sand of the old anchor well and seat lips. I also sanded of the old flowcat in prep for the new parts to be glassed in. Dam it makes a mess. I was covered in white dust as was the entire boat. It was a good few mm's thick. I vacuumed it out a few times so I could see again. Next I glassed one side of the anchor well pieces and a couple of the seat rests.
