That's a might fine Mariner Kwik, it'll push the Bumblebee along nicely.

Pop the boat and the trailer into the water at the slip to see if if solves your peeing prob.
also ,

give some of the guys in the prop section a shout to make sure that then engine is not being over or under worked but running exactly where it should be, follow the sitcky at the top of that forum so they can tell you if your propped right. hate to see the engine quit after a while on you esp after all the good work your after doing there.

Yeah, I got some good responses from the chaps in the Merc/Mariner section. Upon their advice I got the thermostats out, and I'm glad I did too! Check out the pics below lol

Thanks Trooper! Not long till splash time now woooo. Their is a big air show on in about 3 weeks, so come hell or high water Bumblebee will be out for that hehe (hopefully without oars). It is so cool watching the air display from the water as the aircraft are quite literally going right over your head at low level. Fantastic!

Alas I couldn't really do that, as I can't move it with my own car. I need to rely on someone else which is a shame. I hear you about the prop. It's running a 13.5" 23p Laser II at the moment. I'm thinking of moving to a 14" 21p Trophy Plus four blade. I asked in the prop section, and the guys all said try it with the one I've got first and see how it goes. Should have some crazy top end with 23p though!!

Now the update:

Upon advice from the helpful guys in the Merc/Mariner outboard section I took the lower unit off and the water pump, gaskets, plate and housing were all brand new (as the seller had told me, I just needed to check myself or I'd have gone mad). Pickup tube was making good contact, so I greased everything up and checked the oil before refitting.

That led me to tonight's work; removing the thermostats. That in theory is easy. Four bolts out and you can inspect. First bolt I tried to loosen snapped with next to no force on it. Bummer.

I moved on to the other bolt and heated it up with a blow torch before using an impact driver to remove it. No problem, came out great with a good bit of heat. You can also see the snapped bolt in this one and a whole host of crud and salt!!

IMG_2283.jpg

Using the blow torch and a stud extractor I managed to get the remains of the offending bolt out. Thankfully it had snapped about 2-3mm from the top of the bolt so it gave me something to grab on to.

Do you guys think these thermostats need replacing?? LOL

IMG_2287.jpg

IMG_2289.jpg

A friendly chap I know gave me a thermostat to try, unfortunately is was the wrong one. The one in the middle is one I cleaned up just to see if it would pop in boiling water. Needless to say it didn't! heh
I'm going to order two with seals and gaskets in the morning. Should have them ready to install on Thursday night.

IMG_2290.jpg

It also needs a new temperature sender (port side) for the gauge. Tried testing it as per the factory manual but it is 100% dead.
So all in all not a bad night's work. I'm looking forward to fitting the new parts and firing her back up!!

That is great news! Glad to hear that the Mariner is on the mend...I don't know if they mentioned it, but while you have everything apart, flush the engine with water through the thermostat passages and anywhere else you can shove a hose...

Also, don't forget to ask for advice on whether or not you should bypass the oil injection system and just go for a simpler and more reliable method of pre-mixing...

Can't wait to see pics of it flying on the water...

Have you check compression on your motor already? Hopefully, the PO never overheated the motor with those god awful t-stats.

It's such a cheap part....amazes me that people don't change them out every couple years just to be safe.

Yeah I gave it a good blast through, from the muffs at the bottom to push it out, then down through the stat housing, then back out from the muffs. Gave it a once through with the cowl flush plug too just for good measure :)

Oil system is bypassed GT. I'm not risking the motor for the sake of the convenience of not having to mix. Pre-mix for me! :D

Probably because the bolts are such a pain in the *** to remove  If they were done like you say every few years, and the bolts were greased each time, it would be a painless, cheap fix

I've got my compression gauge out ready, that's going to be my job for tomorrow. I'll have a root through the manual tomorrow and try and find out what the factory pressures should be. Like you say, lets hope he didn't over heat it!

A couple of tips on the t-stat bolts...Run a tap into the threads to make sure they are clean, get new Stainless Steel Bolts and lock washers, then you can either use some Hi-temp silicone on the threads or use Never-seize Grease, with lock washers...I believe there is a Marine Grade of the Never-seize grease...that should make any future removal much easier...

As far as the compression on the engine, there are many trains of thought , but basically you are looking for even compression among all the cylinders with approximately less than a 10% variation...

As an example, if the first cylinder is 100 psi, then the rest should fall within 5-10 psi of that one...from 95-105 psi would be ideal, but a few more or less wouldn't be the end of the world either...

Cold engines tend to read lower than hot...fuel and oil in the cylinders will also tend to give higher readings...

Got the engine sorted today. It was reading 130-133 psi across all six cylinders :D

Put the new thermostats in last night after tapping out the threads and cleaning up the bolts. Ran it up in a tank and it worked like a charm!

IMG_2297.jpg

I also used a temp gun I to make sure the heads weren't getting too hot. This shows temps before starting:

IMG_2300.jpg

Went up to about 120-140*f at idle in the tank after about 10 mins. Tell tale was showing water within about 10 sec, then at full flow when the thermostats opened after about 2-3 mins.

Quick pic of the dash illuminated last night before I left the marina at about 10:30pm! Still need to order a bulb for the speedo. PC161 bulbs are night-on impossible to get in the UK! Looks like I'm gonna have to order one from eBay US.

Got the carpet in today, which let me put some trim and the seats in! Woo! Starting to look like a boat now:

Now for the VIDEOS in HD!! Both are running on the hose. This is because I'd forgot to take a video until after I emptied the huge tank lol

Thanks GT. That sound!!! I drool every time I hear it. Kate thinks I have an unhealthy fascination of listening to V8 engines on youtube. To me they are music!

The motor def sounds mean.

Thanks dude. I love the sound of these motors! I could listen to it all day lol

BIG NEWS!!!! Bumblebee is ready for getting splashed in the morning!! I took these last pictures before this Autobot heads into the water!

Awesome good news on the upcoming water christening!

Bumblebee looks Spectacular!

To say that I am a wee bit envious is an absolute understatement!

I too, drool at the sound of a healthy engine...

Safe Journey, Have Fun, and Godspeed!

Oh yeah, don't forget the bilge plug...

If possible, pics, or better yet, video would be most appreciated...ahhh, but to live vicariously through the wonderful accomplishments of successful Iboaters...

Let Autobot Bumblebee be a long time provider Fantastic times!

and one of Kate enjoying the fist glimpse of sun we've had this summer!!

IMG_2332.jpg

All in all it has gone pretty well. The power is PHENOMENAL!! Instant acceleration. There is almost no time between dropping the throttle and it being on the plane. Can't believe the difference this has made. Did a rolling start from idle in forwards, with a full tank of fuel, two grown guys and a box of tools.... went off the clock in about 5secs!! It's a 50mph quicksilver clock, and I'm going to have to consider getting a bigger one. We must have been hitting about 60kts easy. Was quite scary!

Needed to put three bags of sand up front in the bow to even the weight out. This made a big difference to how it handles at low-medium speeds. It also looks much flatter in the water.

Only thing I've noticed is my temperature gauge is reading hot after a short while. Water is being pumped, tell tale is operating etc it's just registering as high on the gauge. I've just replaced the sender with a second hand one and I'm not sure whether these should be paired like some auto solutions? I'll post this question in the outboards section, but if anyone has any ideas I'm open to suggestion.

All I can say is I'm one very happy man right now!! Woo!! Still got a lot more to do though, so watch this space :)

Tried to take some video by the way. Was getting too much wind noise and vibration from trying to hold the camera (just an iPhone 4). What I'm going to try is mounting it in a car kit under the screen pointing back. The screen should get rid of the wind noise, and the mount hold it straight. Maybe. Downside is you'll all have to deal with my ear-to-ear grin for the whole video :D:D:D
