nice slot redfish

but i have done alot of thinking and a little work on the starcraft. i started the decking and was thinking of storage and seating and a fishbox. i had 2 plastic seats in the back to sit for fishing and swivel for under way. i then thought of the large cooler for a fishbox/seats.

and added tiedowns

I like how you anchored the cooler. That this is going nowhere.

i believe mine is a 20 inch shaft, the only real pics i have are in this thread.
others have the same boat, look for starcraft center console, CC or mariner

Hi Joe!!! enjoyed your reports very much......I do however shudder at a couple of your "repairs"!!! It is difficult to accurately size the amount of the "corrosion" repairs....Electrolisis actually, which is related to my second concern. It is difficult to determine exactly how far the damage extends, and unless the area was cleaned throughly and TREATED to halt the deteration, it will continue........Secondly, the use of a primer containing zinc on an aluminum boat used in SALT WATER is guaranteed to cause severe corrosion!!! Two "active" metals plus an electrolyte (Salt Water) gives you a Battery!!! Batterys create a current which thou minute, will make your boat resemble "swiss cheese" in a very short time!!! The primer used by the Starcraft factory is epoxy based, which is what should be used on any bare aluminum spots......Am very surprised none of the "paint" suppliers informed you of this!!!
Don't really understand the extra layer of aluminum on the outside of the transom??? Plus, if you try to weld the edges near the rivet lines, the factory uses a sealer at the double row rivet joints which the heat will damage.
I would also suggest you add a small ply plate on the outside of the transom where the OB Motor will clamp as the mounting bracket has internal ribs to help the motor "grip" the transom better(Check any of the pics on a factory OB.)
Don't get me wrong.....You have done a terrific job on your boat, I hope my re-build turns out looking as good as yours!!! Its all a learning process which takes time and experience.....A person who hasn't made any mistakes, hasn't
learned ANYTHING!!!
Good luck and safely enjoy YOUR creation!!!

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

i ended up using a primer from a local source that was self etching, i don't think it was zinc. i etched it my self, anyway. i went with the out side skin cause th PO fiberglassed over the outside and there was some holes near the middle. i went out side as a personal choice as inside would have cuased me to remove some extra brackets that secure the transom. many , here have voiced opinions on my "repairs" but i'm comfortable with them. the manufactures don't always do what's best either. expandable foam added to my boats problems by not allowing the water to drain to the back. the other problem was the po left the boat in salt water with the mtr down and the battery hooked up(no switch).

thank you for your interest and opinions

Just for the record...

I really like the method you used to add that outer skin on the transom in order to firm the whole thing up. If I were to do my "patch job" over again I would take the route that you took.

I also think the stripe you painted up on your hull is awesome! Did you ever wrap up the paint work? Photo?

Cheers man!

I actually found the brochure in your photos ... including the 22'er, which is the only one that takes XL (25") .... photo of boat for sale with 25" shaft looks like it would take a 20" shaft (it looks like the motor is fairly low to bottom of keel). it has a 150 hp .... which I'm thinking of swapping off and putting on a 100 or 115 hp four stroke yamaha. ... if your 21' has a 60 ... it should be enough power!!? or is that 80? ... regardless 100 or 115 would be enough? .. how fast does yours go?

now I realize I was looking at the picture on the brochure, not YOUR boat. What do you use? ... boat is 300 lbs heavier than yours (by brochure specs).

thanks

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

is it 2 or 4-stroke?

how fast will it go?

since the 22' takes a 25" shaft (XL) I would lean towards using my 100 hp 4-stroke yamaha saving me changing the controls ... or I might use a honda 115 four-stroke coming off my big RIB.

thanks

i didn't have in the water for long but 1 time we were out and the gulf was like a lake and i opened it up and it went faster than i would ever need and probably never be able to use. i'm actually thinking about a newer 90 hp
my 115 is a 2 stroke johnson.

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

I am going to look at a 1977 21ft CC this weekend. It is in rough shape, needing a new floor, some trailer work, and my guess a new transom as well. He is asking $800 for it. He said the lower unit went out on his 90 Evinrude 2 years ago and it's been sitting ever since. I read through this entire thread and got a lot of information. I think you are right...restoring must be like a drug....I'm really wanting to give it my all. It has always broken my heart to see boats rot away in people's yards.... If I do get it, I guess I will have to start a thread as well to keep tabs of my progress. Everybody in this forum passed on the knowledge they had and with all your help I may be the next person to give an Aluminum Starcraft a second life!!!
