At the rate you are using 5200 I need to buy stock in it! :D Better than sinking though!

Looks good and I LOLed after reading your Feb. posts of you under it and your wife working the inside. I chuckle when something like a bent drill gets hammered back into almost perfect straightness or the socket gets riveted to the hull. Life goes on.....

Hey,

Looking good, for anyone else that may need sheet aluminum, i went to the local supplier and they sold me a damaged 4X8 sheet for 70 bucks, they said it was basically cost. They got the sheet and two corners were bent, like it had been dropped.

I straightened them out with pliers, its a perfect sheet. Just ask for damaged material first, they didnt mention they had it, i had to ask.

Alot of times they will also have scrap, or you may have to just pay the 140 bucks.

i've been kicking around leaving the new skin alum... no paint. i skuffed it up smoothing the cut edges and tried some 1000 wet and dry sand paper and buffed a small section and could live with it. thought of keeping it and clear coating, kinda like the look. any input poss. or neg would be appreciated

thanks

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

thanks ja

all i did was buy the angle and hold it in place. this guy was great. he's one of my best customers does alot of local racing and fabs alot of his stuff. i was real happy with the results.
now i can do a leak test( i have one under the knee brace and last rib and chine i think thats what they call the ribs that run bow to stern on the bottom of the hull), i used gluvits all around it on the hull but theres still a small leak. i am thinking of trying to do something from the bottom.
now i can do a leak test and flip to prep for paint

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

after a water test i plan on flipping the boat to prep for paint. i will try this with me and my 2 sons( i know we should have more guys, but i'm counting that we are from italian desent we can handle it :D)

my question is the paint that's on the bottom now. it is textured??? sanding doesn't seem like it will be totally effective.

the 2 pics below are the same area ones has been wetted to try to show the texture. any input

Hey,

That is orange peel, or at least that would be my guess. The boat must have been painted with a sprayer in the past and they didnt wet sand it. You could probably wet sand the entire boat and spray it if the paint isnt chipping off. Does it appear to have clear coat on it???

Also, I have recent experiance in flipping a boat. You get it up on its edge and its scary. I place pool noodles on the ground where it would be landing. I also tied my truck to the highest point, and once i got it on its side, i slowy backed up letting it down. Flipping it back upright was much easier.

I also installed bracing from one side to the other, just so it could not distort or crush.

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

thanks chad,

i left the cross brace that holds the top of the splashwell in for support.

the paint is another story... i don't think it orange peel(though it does look loike it) the bottom paint is diff thicker and was done by 1 of the PO because they put a little on the bottom of the mtr. the texture is too consistant.
i'll try sanding the best i can. we always washed our trucks with tide laundry detergent first, and then a tack cloth before paint.

ez, thanks for looking in!!!

i think it's some kind of bottom paint and the spot on the motor that they painted is also dimpled and thick. i plan on sanding the best i can with an electric sander i will scruge pad around all rivets the best i can.

You aren't flipping it right? If you were, I'd chemical strip it.

If you have some warm temps there then the chem stripper with a power washer kicks butt.

Napa had a chem stripper that is enviro friendly that should eat though that and save the rivets a beating. Try a pint and see what it does for a joke.
