Good to see forward progress! I liked how the G/Flex worked for me. Bummer you had to tear up your paint job, but your mind will be at ease. 2 steps forward 1 step back is still 1 step forward.

Now that's something I've never seen. Epoxy and Fiberglass cloth applied to an Aluminum boat. I'll be interested in learning if this will have longevity. I KNOW the G-GLEX is some really good stuff just never seen or heard of it being used in combination with cloth on a Tin Boat.

Re: 1986 Blue Fin restore

Now, THAT, was informative and Like I said VERY Interesting. It does not appear that you followed their repair as shown. They thickened the resin in order to make it more of a filler type mix and to fill the weave of the cloth better as well as to aid in the final sanding and fairing process. I wonder if this will effect the overall success of the process. Please keep us posted in the Months to come on the durability of this patch and how it performs. As a Glasser I will be extremely interested in knowing if the G-Flex is effective in making these types of repairs and will indeed remain attached to the hull and not delaminate over time and use.

i did not follow that exact part as shown because i did not have a hole in my boat. i was preventing this from happening. I hope that it will work but IDK lol. i did use the epoxy on the aluminum and then wetted out the fiberglass as well. then placed the wetted glass on the wetted aluminum. i will be interested to see as well. my first time with epoxy so its a learning curve right? i will keep all informed.

however, i plan to 5200 the aluminum cover plate and bolt it over this patch. so it may be difficult to do a long term evaluation.

AHHH I See. Well If you Rivet a protective patch over that then I have no doubt that the G-Flex will take care of the issue. It remains flexible and is tough as nails. Combined with 5200 and the aluminum plate, Heck you'll have a Battleship!!!!

Re: 1986 Blue Fin restore

here is my to do list. salmons season opens on the 1st.......UGH

dry fit and drill transom.
coat transom 3x with spar varnish
prep for paint on the splash well area and 5200 the splash well
paint splash well
get a new motor kick plate made and finish the welding on the knee brace
install transom
install motor!!!!

clean the rest of the interior rivets in prep for "coat-it"
Acetone interior then apply coat-it
Leak check!!!

cut and dry fit carpet on the rails and interior sides.
cement the carpet in
install bilge and re-install the q/4 diamond plate bow plate
re install all the aluminum strips and bow guard and sterns caps....

cut and dry fit floors including extra support for seat mounts (it was a weak spot last time)
cut and dry fit console and stern storage
design bow deck and cut
cut out speaker holes
seal everything and paint the deck RED! yes RED! with "softsand" for grip. i got samples of it and i really liked it.
carpet the stern storage and bow deck (i think, maybe paint it instead. not sure yet)

then its electrical time! 2 bow mount batteries for the minn kota, one house/starter and one for down riggers. luckily i can reuse most of my old wiring as it was pretty new. oh and of course the stereo!!!!

finish the kicker bracket design and install it and hopefully run her for a test! can it be done before july 1st?

I test fitted and drilled the holes for the transom last night. I know if the epoxy you have to bore the holes out to make room for the resin. Is it the same spar varnish? Maybe to a degree? How much wider should I make the holes?

Re: 1986 Blue Fin restore

been a bit since i updated:

My iboats delivery:

the coat it went in pretty easy. really flowed much more than i thought it would. so i used more than i needed in some places. still have some spots towards the stern that need to be attended to as the splashwell wasn't complete yet:

Transom after 3 coats of spar varnish:

and the transom installed. tight fit!

Re: 1986 Blue Fin restore

my buddy and i made up that motor plate. 1/4" outside plate and 16 gauge on the inside so that it would fit right. thought it turned out pretty sweet and will match the kicker bracket that we are going to make as well.

here is the transom sealed up. might have gone crazy with the 5200:

i will be painting the splashwell. thought the seal and all turned out well:

the knee brace isn't moving now:

end result on the transom is it seems damn strong. cant wait to mount the motor this weekend. got exterior plywood this weekend and am excited to get that in and the carpeting on the sidewalls.

Re: 1986 Blue Fin restore

I like the look of this - particularly the diamond transom plate - I will be replacing a transom next year, and was looking for something to put in place of the original plywood panel the manufacturer installed. This fits the bill.

Re: 1986 Blue Fin restore

goign to hang the motor and float it after work today! paitned the splashwell with rusto in a can. sanded, acid washed, acetoned, etched, primed and painted. looks pretty good minus a few runs.

floor is sealed on the bottom with spar varnish, painted the top with Glidden oil based deck and porch in RED!!!! Added softsand medium grit on first coat. i will have pictures later of it. saved money on the decking by getting it from a friend that works at a mill. didn't know they were rejects. there is a name for them but cant remember. we will se how they turn out. they are exterior grade 1/2 inch b/c.......8 sheets for $50 so i just picked the best faced ones for the floor. rest is for the bow deck and stern cabinets and such. FYI the picture is of the bottom of the deck not the top......

Re: 1986 Blue Fin restore

well my buddy and girlfriend and I got some serious work done. motor hung and float tested. not going to lie. a little bit of seeping from a rib or two. easy to fix with coat it but the transom is sealed and the rest of the ribs are great:

painted the top of the deck. it is a little red...lol...coat of red then softsand on it while wet then one more coat of red over it. feels good on the feet. did i mention it was a bit red? i wanted to be different.

CARPET TIME!!!!

got rails on as well:

it looks great!
