Re: 1986 evinrude 140 question

The more you describe this motor, the more it sounds like it's been heavily modded for speed: Hi-perf heads and flywheel, different ignition, low water pickup..... I'm suprised it didn't have boyenson reeds in it. It may have some port work in it as well. Generally, when higher compression heads are put on and things get changed, the carb have to be re-jetted to a richer jetting setup. You may be getting that lean sneeze from the mods that were done to that motor.

Can you post some pictures of this beast?

Re: 1986 evinrude 140 question

i will get some tomorrow, the guy i bought it from told me to use 32:1 oil/gas, because it would spin 7000-7400rpm, i rode in the boat, i witnessed the tach hit 7000, but i have it on a tunnel hull flats boat, and do not intend on pushing it that hard, so i have been using 50:1. the more and more i mess with it, the more i am wanting another engine. it is loud as hell, they cut a hole in the mid section, so the exhaust comes out from there, i am really ready to see it go.

Yep....sounds like it's set up for speed. It may be ported too.

Re: 1986 evinrude 140 question

well, the problem was the flywheel. aparently the previous owner put an aftermarket flywheel on it, which has several key slots in it to advance/retard timing, put the stock one on it, with the corect timer, stator, and switchbox. she runs like a singer now!
