Re: 1986 ss 201

Very slow progress, but it is coming together. Got my floor vinyl ordered and it is being shipped today. Now I just have to get the floor finished and the foam in. I got the last of the planning and fitting done for the floor, total of 17'6" of flat floor area. It is now ready to come out for three or four coats of spar varnish.

Back aways when I was digging out all the foam in the bow I commented that there was a ton of wasted space under the bow floor, so this is the storage compartment I came up with, it is 10.5" deep 16"wide at the front and 24"wide at the back.

Thanks a bunch guys, a little bit and a little bit there, and your right Jim it comes together fast and seems that the more progress you make the more you want to get done.

What kind of vinyl flooring did you get? Will you have seams?

DII,

Your rebuild is looking great. Not familiar with Sherwood Lake. East or West of Kenora? I scrounged up a photo of our SS201. Hope my attempt to post the photo works... seems to only let me post a thumbnail. If you look past the tuckered out junior seaman, notice the lower strake on ours continues all the way forward up the bow. I think from reading earlier posts that this is what constitutes the V5 hull.

I know you have a Merc so I won't slag it ;) but you can see in the photo we run the original OMC drive with the gear-driven tilt. They are fantastic for speed and degree of tilt and for range of steering angle. With that drive we can spin this boat in its own length.

Hey Paddi, that boat looks awfully familiar!!! I actually get to see what the side stripes look like complete. Mine hits the paint barn next month with custom colors and am thinking about a custom graphic. Graphite base with royal blue trim.

Hey DJ thanks for stopping by, I ordered Seaway marine floor vinyl I think it is Nautalex but sold under the Seaway name in Canada. It is only 72" wide so I will have a seam, I'm not a 100% sure how or where yet but am working on a couple ideas. Once I figure it out I will be posting the results.

Fuel tank is installed, the ply blocks with rubber pads worked great. I used 8"lengths 1" rubber hose to hold the tank centered in the opening, this will allow for expansion and also cushion the tank.

Special thanks out to Jim for hooking me up with his supplier for 1.5" marine fuel fill hose. This hose is super flexable, does not even hint at kinking, ( unlike the Goodyear stuff). If you guys want the best fill hose ask your suppliers for Novaflex Hose, made in the USA.

The tank looks a 1000% better than when you pulled it out. Sounds like you have a good securing system too.

Hey Glen,

Looks great man! Glad the fuel fill hose worked awesome for ya!

Good idea to add some rubber hose along the side a flexible "wedge" to hold the tank in place.

Nice Job!

Thanks guys, it is coming together. Started coating the deck pieces with spar varnish yesterday. Now it's time to start installing foam.

Re: 1986 ss 201

I know you guys are going to let me have it for this:eek:, but here we go anyhow. After spending close to five hours carefuly cutting and triming the 2" blue foam I bought for flotation, I have a so-so job done under the ski locker floor, a whooping 8 square feet. I started on the hull area out side the stringers and after 10-15 minutes had one piece cut and fit sort of. There will be a total of 204 pieces all slightly different, even if I get better at cutting it and it only takes 12 minutes per piece that is 40 hours of cutting and fitting foam. Know where I'm going with this yet??
The second problem I am concerened with is the hull itself. The cross ribs in the hull are 18" apart, 4"more than on the 16 or 18 SS, when you stand on the hull aluminum between the ribs you can feel the aluminum flex somewhat. I am really thinking that the pour foam they installed in this boat at the factory was was not only flotation, but structual to support the aluminum between the ribs.

So I am seriously looking at using a combination of blue foam and this product http://www.tigerfoam.ca/index.php to get the flotation, strength and drainage needed to do this rebuild correctly. This product is pricey, but it allows you to place exactly the right amount of foam where you want it.

Okay let me have it!!!

Kidding man, just kidding....

I love pour in foam, really I do (I've said it before).

If you have positive drainage, and/or keep it dry, you are great:cool:

Hey Jason thanks, for some reason iboats wouldn't let me respond to the first post you did, YIKES

DJ thanks for stopping by, I agree I don't see a way to use sheet foam properly , because of the shape of the hull. This Tiger foam is sprayed in and can be done in one inch layers to get the proper build up. After considerable reading I think with carefull spraying drainage channels can be done while building up the foam.

Re: 1986 ss 201

rip some sections of PVC pipe lengthwise to cover the channel areas before you pour? i'm fine with pour foam.....you won't be the next guy restoring that boat! <EVIL LAUGH>

as i've said before, i think the factory wasn't entirely crazy to use the stuff. in addition to structural issues, there's the NOISE factor. adhering a semirigid foam to back of entire hull below waterline has to help with the BOOM. so you gotta keep the boat covered and drained....big deal....the leather upholstery on your Ferrari will rot too if you leave the windows open.
