So, I have been reading all the restoration threads (GREAT STUFF) and getting ready to jump in on a project boat.

I have a lead on a 1986 Starcraft Super Sport with a 50hp Johnson. CO says that the motor starts and runs well. Needs minor interior work to get back in the water. He replaced the floor 7yrs ago but it was left outdoors without a cover so the floor is bad again. There was a previous repair to the hull that does not leak that was repainted in a non matching paint (primer?). Trailer has surface rust but new tires / rims.

Before I go do something silly are there any questions I should be asking other than how the repair was performed?

Owner is looking for 800.

That is a nice looking rig. For $800 (or less), so long as the motor checks out, I think that would be a fair deal. (Hmmmm, what year is the outboard there)

Huh, that OB kinda looks older than 86 vintage to me. One of the OB guys may swing through and mention something about "electric shift". Otta my league though.

That's an early 70's Johnson and is probably an electric shifter.

I am sensing this is not a good thing...

Thoughts?

I missed the 1986 part at first. Yeah, there's nothing 1986 there at all. That's an early 70's hull as well.

OMC's electric shift system was a fine system and wasn't particularly troublesome from what I understand. The problem is that it has some crucial parts that are no longer available, namely the shift solenoids in the lower unit and the electrical switch in the control box. When everything is working it's fine but if it stops shifting you could be up a creek for parts. I'd run one but I wouldn't put a lot of money into it.

Interesting.... I am ok with an older boat. (I was produced in the early 70's and have been holding up pretty well). Based on hull age and parts availability is 800 too much?

I think I'd need to see more of the boat. Close up too. Looks pretty goo from where I'm sitting though. Trailer looks all right.

Where abouts are you located? When it comes to pricing location matters actually.

I am wondering about that big splotch of paint on the starboard side there, damage maybe?

I am in northern NJ. The splotch is a repair. Current owner says no dent or leaks but will need to see.

If the motor runs and shifts, $800 is quite fair.

I had a 1969 rude 55 hp that was a electric shift. I ran it about 4 years. One thing I did have trouble with was water entering into the lower unit. When the seals let water in the shift solenoids would short out and leave you in forward or reverse. Not good. I could drain the lower unit and refill with new oil and it would start working again, but I did have to replace the seals to fix the problem.

The repair bothers me a bit. Is that hull rippled just forward of the patch of paint? If so that will be very hard to get looking good again.

I might offer $500, sell that motor for $500 and look for another during the resto.

So, the hull repair was done with bondo. There was a matching repair on the other side of the hull. The Floor was redone with particle board so no templates. Based on that and the concerns with the motor I decided to pass on that project.

I am still on the hunt.

Thank you for all the input and advice!

There are plenty enough SC's out there to not have to settle for one with major hull defects. Wise move.

Score! The family is now proud owners of a 1972 Starcraft Super Sport 16. Came with a 73 Sea lion trailer. Hull is straight, most of the floor is solid with a soft section up in the bow so I think I have decent templates. The bow seats are pretty shot. Paint is in good shape. Hardware is pretty corroded and will be replaced but will have to figure out how to save the stern light. Trailer is solid but has a good bit of surface rust. Three hr drive home and I did not even know it was behind me.

I have a line on a solid 1973 70hp Evinrude that I will go see tonight! Now to finish off a few honey do projects and then I am all clear by the wife to start restoring her.

Hopefully I am doing the photo attachments properly.

Welcome aboard BEnberg, nice 16' SS you scored there:)

They are versatile boats, great for almost anything.

That 70hp will be a good size for the boat, should get 35mph+ if she runs well.:D
