THanks again guys, for the info on my lower unit. Checked the oil and it is OK. No emulsion. So I poured it back in and replaced the sealings as advised.
I have run the motor in a trashcan and would need a further advice. It starts with a firts pull or two, (sparkplugs were clean OK, when I checked them), when it starts, a thin flow starts pouring out of the control pee stream, as it warms up after a minute or two, the flow gets thinner, really more of a dripping. Strangely enough, with lower rpm?s it seems getting little stronger, with higher rpm?s just gets thinner. I ran the motor for maybe 3-4 minutes and than stoped, so I think it did not get all too hot even, if it was not cooling properly. I will change the impeller anyway, but could it be that the gasket is blown ? Do cylinder heads crack on 2strokes ? My outboard has #4236S-E02136. THank you kindly for your help!

Re: 1987 6 or 8 HP Evinrude Cooling Problem

I don't know what the number is you are quoting. 4236S would not make it a 1987 model or a 6 or 8 hp. It is the model number for a 1972 4 hp!
But that does not have a cooling water telltale! (It does not have a twist grip throttle control or reverse gear either)

A 6 or 8 hp 1987 recreational model will have the model number E6(or8)RCUD or E6(or8)RLCUD

Assuming it is a 1987 6 or 8 hp. Check that the telltale is not blocked or obstructed esp at the fitting on the exhaust manifold cover.

Overhaul the waterpump and while doing that connect a hose to the water tube to make sure you can get a good water flow through the engine. The grommet at the top of the water tube can become squeezed, by corrosion, over the end of the tube until it blocks the flow. A stout wire pushed up the water tube aids diagnosis. If it hits something rubbery its the grommet and that needs replacing!

When running the telltale stream should not be hotter than warm and it should be posiible to touch the cylinder block and maintain contact for a couple of seconds. If you cannot or if a splash of water boils it is overheating ( the head around the plugs may be hotter though.

The cooling passage around the head can also become blocked, but that will not affect the telltale stream

Steam issuing from the exhaust relief ports is also a sign of ovrheating.

If it starts easily and runs well I would not be suspecting the head gasket or a cracked head.

Re: 1987 6 or 8 HP Evinrude Cooling Problem

Thanks Commander!

Sounds like good news. I figured the number is funny, when buying I was told it is a 1980?s 7,5HP labeled as 5HP. I did not bother, as the price was fair and figured I can always sell for this. Later on, when I checked on the internet, it said it is a a 4HP model. But from the parts number, like the cylinder head etc. under the cover it said it is a 1987 6HP model. Funny.
Thank you very much for your insight and time spent with my request for advice.
