1987 Classic 50 Switchbox wiring question

Hi guys I just finished a rebuild of the fuel pump and carburettors, and found that at least one of the wires attached to the right hand side of the switchbox has the insulation falling off it, when you touched it even more just fell away - the wire is exposed and green showing corrosion. For now I have covered it in electrical tape. The wire ( a cream white colour) I assume is coming from either the stator or the trigger.

My question is if this is so, can the wires to the stator and trigger be replaced without replacing the stator or trigger??. (eg do they just clip or screw into these components??).

With the trigger n stator wires they are molded in and almost impossible to replace. Unless you can cut out the bad and solder in new wire, but rarely is that the case.

I would go through the whole wiring harness with a fine tooth comb and verify the rest arent crumbling..

I'll second the new harness. Its going to cost a few dollars but when you're out on the water, its harder to get help.

Hi guys, thanks for your advice. I ended up taking the engine to a Mercury service centre dealer who said that both the stator and trigger were shot and had to be replaced - $978 - that hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

But now you've got a great motor that will give you peace of mind out on the water!
