i was on the river the other day and motor started running funny as if it were only running on 3 cyl, took the boat out and checked spark...good spark on all 4 cyl.i next checked compression,120 on 3 and 60 on 1.
i dumped 2 caps of 2 cycle oil in the bad cyl and checked again now it hit a little over 100psi.my dad thinks it may be a broken or wore ring?my dad and i are going to do our first outboard rebuild.i have little to moderate exp with this but am very mechanically inclined,my dad on the other hand has worked on, rebuilt and built car engines since he was a teen.
I am unable to find anything on how to remove the phead from case?does any1 have a pic or description on how to remove phead?

You will need a factory service manual if you plan to overhaul it yourself. The factory manual is the only one to get. Contact the original pulisher: Ken Cook Co. in Milwaukee for one. You can see the exploded parts diagrams online at: epc.brp.com.

Why don'y you just pull the cylinder head for a start and see what the damage is; you may just have a blown cylinder head gasket.

am planing on pulling head just to take a look, but am pretty sure thats not it cause just had new head gaskets put on when i had phead welded a couple months ago and there is absolutly no water leaking out anywhere on phead.

After i take head off here ina bit ill let u know what i find.

took off the head on side that is giving 60 psi reading and piston has couple dings on side of exhaust ports and exhaust ports have what looks like minor dings on the edges toward crank.

which book would i need to get?i saw several, most were self explanitory.i would rather not buy the $90 one,do you happen to know which one will tell me what i need to know in-order to do a rebuild?

I'm not going to do a total rebuild unless i absolutely have to.my plan was to re-smooth the cyl walls on all cylinders and re-ring the pistons,But i may have to have the one bored?it has a slight groove in the cyl wall of the one that messed up.doesn't seem to be bad IMO but i'm no pro.i can just barely catch my finger nail on it,kinda light a light scratch in a clearcoat finish.

If i do need to bore that cyl out,can i just do the 1 cyl or do i need to do both on that side of phead?

This one is reasonable and the seller has an excellent reputation.

You have almost certainly lost a ring and will need to do pull the powerhead and repair. At a minimum, you will need a gasket kit and ring set. You should pull the bypass cover so that you can see the ring to be sure.

You need to determine what caused the problem and repair that as well.

Often, the problem is caused by carbon build-up from lugging the engine because of being over-propped or from failure to perform the annual de-carbon treatment.

Follow Ezeke's advice. I'd also tear the carb apart that feeds the bad cylinder. You may find one of the jets on that barrel has some debris or crud in it which is restricting fuel/oil supply to that cylinder. In any event when you overhaul the engine you will need to overhaul both carbs anyway. You should check the water diverters for that cyl also-sometimes one cyl can run hot and it will not set off a hot horn.
