Re: 1987 Johnson 8hp "help"

If made in Canada most likely down the road from me in Peterborough

I now have 3 motors that where made here

40es70 ( 40 hp electric shift 1970)
QD 14
and QD-21

Really nice and strong motors I dont think you will have a problem with your motor if it was take care of like it looks like it has been

Hey Rick,

Yea, it was taken care of well, there is only a couple of chips on it, aside from that it looks brand new "now that it is all cleaned up by me not from the pictures he took before I got it"

First thing is first, get some QL77JC4 plugs, and worry if I should replace that crank seal ASAP or if it is not a huge issue, this winter??? I just dont want to screw the motor up if it is indeed sucking in air...

Yes that's all the water you'll see from the relief port. It's purpose is to vent the exhaust housing and prevent excess back pressure. A few droplets of water just get blown out at the same time, the main water stream goes down the leg and out of the bottom.

The parts catalog only lists one seal so there is only one seal but it sounds as though you can forget about it anyway.

Get rid of those resistor plugs as soon as you can. BZ7HS or even plain unsuppressed B7HS can only help it to run well, but if you can get Champions do so.
I have a set of QL77J4 ( the originals that predate QL77JC4) and a set of B7HS .. Cannot tell the difference.

Re: 1987 Johnson 8hp "help"

Thanks a lot Vic, you are of great help. I guess with this motor not having a hub through exhaust it is a bit different then what I am used to.

I am just curious as to why you don't seem to think the upper seal I should not worry about? this isn't a dangerous situation I am playing with having a leaky crank seal? I honestly do not know, I have never had to mess with a crank seal before.

Going to get the right plugs ASAP!

PS
If I cant get the Champions. Which NGK should I get? I only intend to troll and normal running BZ7HS-10 or B7HS-10?

if your ever down in my area I will show you the old plant :) its now the Canadian Cone Museum

I am going to replace my plugs to wish I could run the R plugs ... I get a lot of noise when the motor is running and I am useing my ham radio ..

lol ham radio, that is funny. my father is a ham radio operator as well. I am familiar with your area, I am born and raised from Sarnia, Ontario. Living up north now.

Just after I made my last post I lost power up till now.. Well I hope to find some Champions tomorrow!

I would really like to know if that crank seal that is leaking slightly is cause for serious concern "seriously, if it is sucking air wont that run the motor lean and screw things up?" I am just one of those cautious kind of people. I am taking the boat out this weekend for fishing and would really like to know if that poses any risk, if it does I will not run it. But I hope I can yank that seal with out cracking the motor apart

I brought the motor in the house and was inspecting further, it almost looks like a grey type of grease that was around that area, but much below that earlier there was premix.. I cleaned it all up and will get the proper plugs tomorrow and run it and see if it leaks.. maybe some how premix got there by another means? I am not sure..

Re: 1987 Johnson 8hp "help"

Got some QL77JC4 plugs today, seems to be running a bit better, I can get the idle much lower now it seems. The powerhead will still shake a bit just a hair above idle, once I pass that it is smooth, not backfiring or coughing or anything.. Yea, the crankshaft seal is leaking very slowly. Would I be safe to use it for the remainder of the year and put a new one in in the off season or no?

Let it run for an hour in the bucket today "have seafoam in the gas, decarbing it. It's all gone now. Pulled out a fair amount of crud!

Re: 1987 Johnson 8hp "help"

So will I be safe or sorry with this crank seal for the remainder of the boating season? both plugs we're a bit wet, so I am taking it that it is not running lean on one cylinder. Just a very very small leak.

Bump :)

Would anyone happen to know the proper setting for the idle screw for this motor? it appears my plugs are wet with fuel so I am thinking she's running a little rich, which would probably explain the shake from the powerhead "idles very low and will stay there all day, but a little shaky from low idle to a bit above idle then is good at higher RPM's"

Plugs should be dry shouldn't they? they are also clean, no black soot or anything, just some little pieces of carbon that is still breaking off from the tops of the pistons "I can see it on them shining a flash light down there"

And about that crank seal?

Thanks!

Re: 1987 Johnson 8hp "help"

Lightly seat the low speed needle and open it up 1 1/4 turn, adjust to highest RPM and then turn out another 1/8 turn.

Re: 1987 Johnson 8hp "help"

Thanks for the setting, appreciate that.

I am not sure I understand what you mean by adjust to the highest RPM? I actually lowered the idle by backing off off the idle screw a bit "I want a very slow idle/troll speed"

Thanks, I will do that next time I get a chance, was told the carb was just rebuilt but I think they backed out the slow speed jet too much.

Thanks again

The detailed procedure for adjusting the mixture screw is in Joe Reeves' item on Carb Needle Adjustmnet on the Engine FAQs board.

You warm it up first. Reduce the revs to the lowest possible. Turn the needle in a bit at a time until it falters ( if the speed increases keep reducing it to keep it to the minimum) then back the needle out again until it just runs smoothly.

Remember that you have a 2 cycle engine, if you try to idle it to slow it woun't run very well.

Re: 1987 Johnson 8hp "help"

Thanks guys, gotcha. I know how to fiddle with the carb, just needed the factory recommended setting as a starting point, same as my 20 Johnson, Sorry I miss understood how it was done in the post from my last. Gotcha now, thats how I do it Vic. I understand also about low idle/2 stroke, not talking harley low when it comes to idling lol. :)

Thanks for the explanation Vic! and for the setting :)

Re: 1987 Johnson 8hp "help"

Had the boat out yesterday, MAN do I love this motor! I can not believe how low I can get the idle down too for trolling! on the way back to the ramp I opened it up, wow does this little guy ever make this boat fly!

I inspected the motor after when I got back, and I have a little bit of premix starting to dribble down from the top of the crank where the seal is where I had cleaned it off before, so this seal is leaking. Is this safe running the motor like this? it runs flawless, but heard it can and will suck in air and lean out my mixture a bit. I just want to know if I will be ok using it for the remainder of this year then get into it in the winter?

Re: 1986 Johnson 8hp "are parts hard to get???"

Well lets hope I never have to replace the power pack ;) This motor has clearly not seen much use, it looks brand new after I cleaned it all up! heck the skeg only has a little bit of rub off on it. I am a happy camper :)

So just those 4 bolts for the foot and it will slide right off, nothing to disconnect or worry about when putting the foot back on huh?

Weird thing is, on the serial number/model number tag it says Made in Canada, not Belgium, interesting.

Hello,
I got the exact Johnson 1987 8HP outboard from my dad. I also noticed the tag made in Canada on the model number but made in Belgium. Anyway, my question is that I am missing the Owner's Manual and would like to know if you could share the one that you found?
thanks
Charles

Re: 1987 Johnson 8hp "help"

Hi guys. Trying to find out what year my motor is as I need a book. stamp is AJ8BACUD. Another stamp says 100 to 1 fuel mix but most info on here says I should be using 50to1. what do ya reckon?

Welcome to iboats......Mike,

The sticker of 100 to 1 fuel mix has been recalled ....alll reports of this fuel ratio have been recalled. As for the motor 'number', I'm not at my listing , so you'll have to wait until another member can get it for you.

BTW, it's never a good idea hijacking a late post (over August !!!) with your post. It's best to make a NEW request...the newest post will get the most replies!!!!

Hang on in there, you'll get a responce!!!
