Your problem probably has nothing to do with the oil injection. Early V-6's had rather free-breathing recirculation systems. There is a service bulletin that describes how to install restrictors in the bleed lines to reduce low RPM smoking and plug fouling. It works and it's cheap. Your injection system is set to run at 50:1 at WOT, and lean-out at lower RPMs. Premixing your gas at 50:1 will actually make your fouling problem much worse. Don't do it. You'll need to see a Merc or Mariner dealer for the parts and the information. I wish I could give you the bulletin number. Maybe somebody can... About a 1-beer job.

Could also be that some of your bleed check valves are clogged. Considering it's age, I'd consider it likely. You can replace them, but 99% of the time they can be cleaned with carb cleaner. You should ask about this at the same time. It's not that hard. You just have to remove them, clean them, and reinstall. About a 2-beer job.

Sorry, I posted a bunch of innacuracies before. I gotta slow down on those 5-beer jobs. I went back and cleaned it up. I apologize if you were confused about the original post. But I think the restrictors would be a big help, and cleaning the bleed valves should definately be done. Only tool's you'll need are a 5/16 combination wrench and a needlenose pliers. And half-a-six-pack. Or a full sixer if you have an observer.

I have almost the exact same motor....

My oil injection was removed prior to me buying the motor and I have never had a problem with fouling plugs... It does smoke a lot during startup and idle until warm up. But I don't think it will hurt you a bit, assuming everything else is clean and working properly.. But try Willy's advice first!

Re: 1987 merc 200 black max oil injection

I've got the same motor and troll 8-10 hours at a time and have never had a fouling problem. I’d keep the oiling system and do as mentioned above and see if that doesn't solve your problem. The other thing to look at is if someone took out the thermostats. That motor doesn’t like to run cold and will smoke like a chimney and foul plugs if allowed to run cold.
I guess my question would be why isn't your warning system working? There is more to the warning system than just the oil system. Its sounds like a disaster just waiting to happen.

You can test the alarm system very easily at least to see if it will work during an overheat situation...

First, turn the key on (don't start the motor, just turn the ignition on).

Find the overheat sensor wire coming from below the #2 spark plug. (top right side plug)

With a wire groung the wire from the sensor to the block. If its working the horn will sound.

the warning horn is not working.why is that needed?as long as you have gauges and you know it is not over heating.isnt that good enough?motor runs good ive not had much trouble wth it.i would like to ensure the system is oiling corretly.you say you dont have any trouble with yours.so you beleive i should sta with oil injection?im listening
thanks
