Piece, how many foam boards did you use for that?

If i remember it was around 3... and with ur boat being a little bigger i would go with 3-4... you can always return one if its not used. I found the foam board worked a little better than the pool noodles due to our stringer set up unlike the starcrafts which have the stringers running in the other direction. For cutting i just used my jig saw and it went through like butter just be prepared to have you and everything near by covered in statically charged foam bits


EDIT: On a side note i know EZ and others have use a vinyl type material for floor and other areas which people really like. Can't remember the name of the stuff... maybe he'll chime in

Thanks for the tip on the foam! As far as the bedliner goes, I like the idea of the button-in carpet to go on top. If it gets too hot, i'll add some of the carpet

Well, I just made a phone call to a local welder and he happened to have some time on his hands to weld up all the cracks. He's also going to beef it up in some spots to make it stronger. He's basically doing it for what it would cost me in materials for bar stock and tools. It will be done in less than 24hrs.

So... the list of things to do this weekend. Add items/ideas if you see fit.

Saturday:

- Inspect tig welds at stringer ends
- Power wash interior of boat shell
- Level and fill hull with water to identify leaky rivets. Mark with wife's eyeliner.
- Drain water and drill rivets out.
- Dry area and replace leaky rivets with closed end pop rivets.
- Degrease hull, scrub, then etch interior of hull with vinegar/water mix.
- Test hull for water tightness a second time
- Dry inside of hull and apply heavy coat of gluvit.
- Cover with heat lamp and let cure overnight.

Sunday

- Ensure Gluvit cured
- Measure and cut decking pieces to required sizes
- Measure and cut foam to required sizes
- Install foam
- Install decking
- Cut and fit new dash wood, paint.
- Install consoles
- Cut and Fit bow-rider wood

Teamster,

Thank you for your input. I appreciate the need for good flotation, particularly on the great lakes. I will spend some time doing some buoyancy calculations based on manufacturer data for pour-in foam vs. Foam board. I do not want to skimp in buoyancy- just in case.

I actually just upgraded my bilge pump last season. How does one pipe two pumps? two separate discharge lines?

In terms of the bed liner, it is going to be white or light tan - my carpet still got unbearably hot in the sun, do you think a light bedliner would get hotter than tan carpet?

Two separate discharge lines is what I did,....

The small one has a float switch and a on/off switch, I like to turn it off when trailering as the float switch can bounce up and down on rough roads causing the pump to go on and off and I don't want it to run dry,........

The monster oh shat pump just has a on/off switch,........I check it to make sure it works but really it's only there for bad times, Thankfully I haven't needed it for that,....

The bed liner stuff is like standing on hot pavement in the summer,..............I just don't personally care for it,....

I used Kiwi Grip to coat my decking when I rebuilt my boat.

It is an excellent product and I highly recommend it.


I can't stand carpet on a boat. It's great at first, but trying to clean it is impossible and it traps way too much moisture for way too long. While the Kiwi Grip is great for traction and easy to clean, it isn't very comfortable for bare feet. I will be trying a new product (not new, but new to boats) called Soft Deck. It is the boat version of Hydro Turf for stand up jet skis. This should have the comfort of carpet without the headaches.

Just picked up some 5/8 advantech for the decking. Good compromise between weight and strength. I called the manufacturer, and they said although its not labeled for this use, their ongoing tests indicate that this would be a good application. They use a waterproof epoxy resin embedded into the wood fibers, so there is no need to overcoat with epoxy or seal in any way.

I will use whatever leftover gluvit epoxy I have to seal it anyway, for added protection.

AdvanTech panels are bonded with a resin system that greatly increases their durability when exposed to weather during construction delays under Exposure 1. However, the panels are not intended for permanent exposure to the weather. AdvanTech, like most other wood products, is susceptible to decay if exposed to long term high moisture conditions. Proper conditioning or ventilation of crawl and attic spaces, as well as correct installation of roof and wall coverings and application of flashing and caulking, will minimize problems due to excessive moisture.

Yikes. Advantech might be nice OSB, but it's still OSB. If you don't seal it, it will be junk in short order with just average boating use. If the wood they used was fully resin absorbed into the fibers to the point that it couldn't take on moisture and rot, it would weigh an astronomical amount. The resin to fiber ratio is more likely in the 50% range or lower, meaning that approximately half of the material in that sheet is ripe for water absorbtion. Even with occasional use, water will always find a way in.

Yup, but resin embedded wood sealed with epoxy is better than non-resin embedded wood sealed with epoxy.

I just found out I may have the opportunity to go with aluminum .080 tread plate instead of wood altogether, so this may even be a moot point.

It won't take long for you to hate that aluminum if you choose to go with it, it's very LOUD, very hot in the summer, and very cold in the winter.

As far as the advantech goes, I'd sand and epoxy the top side and edges of that stuff real good. I'm sure their coating is minimal at best. 3 more good coats of epoxy resin and you should be worry and trouble free for a long time. I'd save the leftover Gluvit for another project or touch-ups and go with a good 2 part epoxy resin.

It won't take long for you to hate that aluminum if you choose to go with it, it's very LOUD, very hot in the summer, and very cold in the winter.

As far as the advantech goes, I'd sand and epoxy the top side and edges of that stuff real good. I'm sure their coating is minimal at best. 3 more good coats of epoxy resin and you should be worry and trouble free for a long time. I will be sealing it. I have some 2 part epoxy here that I can do that with.

What is your personal experience with the aluminum? Does the noise originate from the engine, get transferred to the stringer then to decking? If this is the case, do you think rubber gasket at this juncture will mitigate noise? Also, I'm still going with spray-in, so that will also have a sound deadening effect, no?

I like the no rot in a million years attribute with aluminum, as well as the weight.

If it were me, Id keep the rivets (unless they are wicked loose) and apply the glov-it inside.

Some may be able to be re-bucked, but the glov-it should cure the leaks.

The no rot, and weight are real good reasons to use aluminum decking. Also, you won't have to mess with sealing it or installing a finish like carpet.

The aluminum will be noisy just walking on it, and dropping stuff on it too. There's also the possibility of "oil canning" if you go with too light of a gauge for your deck framing spacing. You can get around this by installing additional framing in your deck, or going with a heavy enough gauge to firmly span your deck spacing. You should post a pic of your deck framing.

If your decking is nice and new and bright and shiny the reflection from the sun is going to cook you while in the boat until it dulls. The reflection from the deck and water, plus the sun shining down on you is going to give you a real good tan... or burn.

It would be easy to put snap in carpet over a aluminum deck,....

Then you could remove the carpet for cleaning,........
