I need help on how to change my impeller on my 1988 85 hp force outboard. Its on my 1988 bayliner Capri that i am restoring. After forever it finally started but no water spraying out of the two holes. I added a tell tale and haven't tried it yet.I took the little cover off and looked behind the thermostat and it looked kinda rusty and dry. I started it yesterday so it should look better in there than that i would think. I have only cranked it on muffs. I wanted to get it running before i started putting down the floor and getting the inside buttoned up. If anyone knew were to get a impeller kit cheap online and maybe knew the one i need would really help. Also will i need a gasket when bolting the lower unit back up?

Chad;

What is the s/n and model number of your engine if you have it?

Re: 1988 85 hp force outboard NO WATER?

Chad;

You beat me to it.

This is the parts listing for your engine:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/1214.cfm

Click on the section "Gear Housing and see item 57/59 and 60. You will need 59 and 57 for sure.

The best thing to do is drop the lower unit and take the water pump housing off (item 60), then you will be able to see the condition of the plate (58), the housing etc., to see if anything is scored from sand etc.

If the engine is new to you, drain the gearbox oil at this time, watching for milky colour of the oil which indicates water in the oil.

NOTE: If you are new to this, do not remove item 32, Pivot Pin as this secures the pivot point for item 45 and if you remove it, it can be very difficult to get back in.

There are many knowledgeable people here who I am sure will be happy to help if you run into problems so do not hesitate to ask.

And not removing the pivot pin item 32, i will still be able to remove the lower unit and change the impeller. I am looking for the whole kit.
