I have 1988 baretta that i bought with a 350 engine and a volvo penta outdrive. This is my first boat actually. I was told when i bought the boat that the gimbal bearings will need to be replaced cause they are making a noise, and the bellows were bad on the outdrive, and that the carb will need to be worked on cause the engine would idle fine, but would die out at about 2,000 rpm or so. I am having a problem cause i can not see what kind of outdrive i have. Can someone tell me what kind of outdrive i have and point me in the right direction to what to look for with the carb. Its a 4 barrel, and the fuel pump works fine. Thanks for all info.

Re: 1988 Baretta 350 with volvo penta

Pictures and full model numbers and serial numbers in some cases, are really going to help. In 88 Volvo didn't use any gimbal bearings, they did have bearing/s in the flywheel cover, but they are nothing like a gimbal bearing.

I am having a problem cause i can not see what kind of outdrive i have

I have to ask, but WHY can't you see the outdrive?

First I want to say thank you for your help and warm welcome. Sorry for the misunderstanding, but I can see the outdrive, just not any id plates that I have search and heard about cause, the outdrive looks as though it was painted. The hull id says MHP25942D888. I also look above the upper bellow that is coming from the outdrive and say a stamp that says Volvo Penta and has the number 853006 Fa2. Might be wrong about the F, cause like I said, its seems to have been painted black. Will get pics soon, and thanks again and hope this info helps. BTW. Its a 20' Cuddy Cabin

Re: 1988 Baretta 350 with volvo penta

It's a 280 drive. If the bellows is torn it's probably gonna be expensive.
It will need universals and a front yoke and seal.
Then the motor will need to come out and the bell housing removed to get to the bearings(2) and seals for the drive shaft.
The motor looks real clean.Probably a new short block.
The carb take it off and send it out to a professional.Check the carb filter it could be clogged.Ethanol is messing with lots of fuel systems.
There is a water/fuel filter by the fuel pump.Take it off and see how dirty it is.
Boats this old usually have that filter missing as it rusts and goes to H%^&
I remove them and put in an aftermarket that's easier to get to.
Once you start working and have a manual.Sometimes they are at the library.
You get into it get back with your results and pics and questions.J

Re: 1988 Baretta 350 with volvo penta

THANKS ALOT ;) . I have a manual and I am pretty mechanically inclined, with automotive engines, as I see and read upon that these motors share similarities. The bellows at the bottom are not torn, the ring that is around them seem to be loose and the bellows dried out and worn. I saw some on ebay that where not that expensive, but I dont know if they will work, just hope so. So the bearing and seals on the driveshaft need to be replaced? Is this where the noise must be coming from? The motor had been rebuilt and has less that 40hrs on it. Do you happen to know the name of these bearings and how do I go about making sure that this is the problem? Not second guessing your statement, just want to make sure and know what to look for before everything goes back in. I Really Thank Everyone For Their Replies. Like I said, its my first time and you guys are already making me feel comfortable. Hopefully I can finish this within a week and be out on the water.

Hey Jerry, Is the Yoke and Seal considered the steering? Can you see any damage from the pictures?

I think you are in for some expensive repairs. The ujoint bellows isn't even attached to the drive. From the corrosion on the drive, I would guess you are in salt water.
At minimum, you need to remove the upper gear box from the drive to see the ujoints. The bearing in the flywheel cover are probably full of milky grease and the engine will need to be pulled and the bearings replaced before they lock up and destroy the flywheel cover.
The ujoints will need replaced, and the drive probably has milky oil in it too. The upper gear box will have to have new seals installed on the ujoint yoke, plus a sealing ring washer.

Here is a previous thread on what you can expect.

Gee Don, Why do you have to bring up bad memories like that?:D

Yes it is a big job but can be done by us DIYers without breaking the bank.

Thats a nice looking boat, BTW, i also have an '88 Baretta, with the same engine. Should run out strong for you, but first get it fixed right and it will pay you back in years of enjoyment.

Make sure to ask questions if your not sure about something, and keep us up to date on your progress.

Thanks. With the way that you help others makes the whole process seem easy. I will get started on this right away. I hope that I can find most of these parts on ebay. The only problem that I seem to probably have will be the part numbers for these parts. Hopefully if they are not to old, some of them still will have them visible. I will post pics of the process, as I see will help others with this problem as well. Thanks again to all.

Re: 1988 Baretta 350 with volvo penta

Can someone give me the bearing part numbers. I want to order everything off of this site and all at once. I already know that the parts that have been mentioned on here are pretty much going to be needed. You guys know what your talking about, so all I need is some part numbers. I found the u joint from this site, got the ring part numbers from the link above, and been searching online for the other part numbers with no success. Need, sealing ring washer, and upper gearbox seals, and flywheel cover bearings, part numbers. Thanks, as I want to get started taking the gearbox out tomorrow, and have parts in the mail to install by this weekend or sooner. Once Again, Thanks.

#66 and #70 are the bearings, and you need the two seals, #69.

FWIW, I would recommend having the upper gear box resealed by a pro who has experience with the older Volvos. It requires shimming and bearing preload that need to be set properly. I have been quoted 400-500 dollars in the past for this which included new seals and new ujoints. Once the upper has been rebuilt, it will need to be reshimmed to the intermediate which I think you can do yourself, along with the rest of the work.

You can do all but rebuild the upper gear box, and possibly even that if you have the tools and know how to follow the OEM manual and do it right.

You can find most of the parts and part numbers right here at iboats.

The connecting componenents for the AQ drive is the section for the transom shield and flywheel cover.

I know you said you have a manual, question is, is it a Seloc or Clymers ????? I hope not.

Re: 1988 Baretta 350 with volvo penta

Thanks. Question, i have never cranked this boat up before, all the information on problems have come from the previous owner. Would it hurt to crank it to see how it sounds for myself. If i do, should i tirn the wheel to see if i hear any grinding. Once again thanks.

It is a Seloc manual (011-X) 3600. Thanks again for the part numbers and all the help. I really want the experience and need it if I plan on keeping this boat up and running for future problems. Thanks Again To All.
