1988 VIP vindicator need help loud noise no forward or reverse

We were out tubing yesterday for about an hour or so just changed out tubers and I was just idling in forward and they waved they were ready so went to about 3/4 throttle and boat wouldn't plane out so went little further and heard a loud bang and boat stopped and engine just revved up . Went to nuetral and tried forward again, prop didn't move, trimmed motor all the way up put in gear and you can hear a grinding clicking noise. Finally got boat on trailer and home , started it out in gear and prop tries to spin but it doesn't just kinda moves a little bit . Never full rotation , when engine off and in gear i can move clockwise with little resistance and every 1/4 turn there's a clicking noise , count clock wise no resistance really, any advice or information or anything will be greatly appreciated . Please help me out what do I need to do, remove, check etc. thanks again

Did you pull the prop off yet? Not sure about the "bang" you heard. Was it a bang or an explosion of gears

I would first see if you spun the prop, but the "clicking noise" im not to sure of. Drain fluid out of drive, and get ready to pull drive for a look see. I have never spun a prop but there are forums here on people that have. Somebody should chime in and offer some more ideas

Don't think it was an explosion of gears there was no clunking or anything no loud grinding nothing that makes me think gears , I'll drain fluid when I get home , how I tell if i spun the prop?

in the search box type spun hub or spun prop. there are folks that have done it. I havent yet but try and read up on symptoms until some one else has some thoughts

How can I check the coupler .? I have a cover where the drive shaft is am I able to remove it while motor is in boat ?

Whats your set up? Motor and drive?

Don in the thread gives some test to do just to try in single some of it out. Worth wile to read about spinning the prop etc

Is it possible to remove engine coupler with out taking engine out of boat?

If I pull out drive off will I be able to tell if it's the couple that went bad ?

When you did Dons procedure to see if hub prop was spun what did you find? Also if you pull drive you can check u-joints and splines to coupler etc

My prop doesn't spin, in water or on the muffs boat running in gear prop doesn't spin any.

Yea if it were my boat I would take drive off, either way if you cant get to coupler without taking engine out you still have to take drive off and when off you can spin shaft and rule out the drive good or bad and go from there.

I will start that tonight , hopefully can get it removed and let ya know what I find . Just the six bolts and the trim bolts ? And the drive should pull out right ?

yea trim down, remove shift cable,trim sender etc
My drive just slid out. Need alignment tool when re installing
