Take both ends of the battery cables off and carefully clean them. Let us know what you get.

Re: 1989 bayliner lost gauge power wont start please help

brown wire is for the trim gauge if you want to install one. I know this sounds pretty elementary, but is the kill switch lanyard all the way on? I had an issue with that once when it was dark outside. the boat would crank but would not start because the kill switch was basically engaged. and like said above, check the battery connections and have the battery tested after that. If you have to bump the solenoid, then it or the starter prob. needs to be replaced too.

Not sure of your year but mine had a fuse on the starter that the positive cable attached to. It looks like plastic with a large copper lug. Mine went out because I shorted the reset out with a wrench:redface:. it ost 30 bucks to replace:mad:

my fuses are all under the dash. u have to lay down and really get under there to see them. basically, if i recall they are on the underside of the dash next to the ignition key. mine are old glass-tube type fuses.

Look toward at the back of the engine.....there is a red circuit breaker back there....see if it tripped....push it in to reset....let us know what it did.

is the solenoid remotely located, not on the starter itself? you may be able to "jump" it and see if it is bad.

Re: 1989 bayliner lost gauge power wont start please help

I don't know if this applies to the older boats, but I had similar problems once.
Checked everything there was to check. Turned out, my ingnition switch went bad:mad:
Which in hind sight makes sense. The starter solenoid is powered directly from the battery, so is the trim motor and switch. The ingnition completes a circuit to the solenoid and alternator which returns to the helm gauges.
You could diagnose this by taking the ignition switch out, finding the "hot" wire and jumping to the starter wire. If it works, I'm lookin' pretty good:D. If it don't, just one more thing you know is not the problem:confused:.
There sould be three or five wires to the switch, depending on the electrical system. I have seen both. Just us a test light to find the hot and then touch each wire until something happens. DO NOT TOUCH THE GROUND!
Good luck.
