I don't know if this applies to the older boats, but I had similar problems once.
Checked everything there was to check. Turned out, my ingnition switch went bad

Which in hind sight makes sense. The starter solenoid is powered directly from the battery, so is the trim motor and switch. The ingnition completes a circuit to the solenoid and alternator which returns to the helm gauges.
You could diagnose this by taking the ignition switch out, finding the "hot" wire and jumping to the starter wire. If it works, I'm lookin' pretty good

There sould be three or five wires to the switch, depending on the electrical system. I have seen both. Just us a test light to find the hot and then touch each wire until something happens. DO NOT TOUCH THE GROUND!
