1989 Doral Prestancia aft cabin access hold

Good afternoon fellow boaters. We recently bought a 1989 Prestancia. It is largely in original condition. We are tweaking it here and there to refresh it but ran into a problem in the aft cabin. Not sure how the access panel should look. We have it open with another piece of carpeted plywood inside protecting the pumps, hoses and cables. Just unsure how this access is supposed to be covered. If anyone has any pics of their own boats and could show us it would be appreciated. I am trying to upload what ours looks like but it won't let me add any more pics.

There is more than one in the aft area. One inside closet in the floor and one behind the seat back cushion

Here is the pic of twobits aft cabin birth.. the panel that is presently under the right mirror is much to large to fit in the space. so it is just sitting there now. Is there supposed to be a properly fitted panel there?

Mine has a piece of canvas with snaps that close that area up. the one in the closet is wood coved in carpet.

ya mine in closet is like chief's and the one in your pic is behind a fitted seat back cushion

Well when you have the table up, the seats move to cover it BUT we are looking to find out how it is supposed appear when the table is down. If you have a picture please post so we can see it. Thanks

sorry boat is already shrink wrapped fro the winter so i cant get you a photo. With table down we have extra cushions to fill space and make the bed leaving the seat back alone to cover access

mine is the same. There is a vinyl cover that snaps INSIDE, but the seatback stays in place to cover the access.

Thanks for the response, I guess that I am missing this vinyl cover.. The seat back that use to cover this is on the table when it is down..

Now I want to find the shower pump as it sounds like it is running constantly when I turn on the breaker.. I found a small bilge pump under the bottom step accessed from the closet floor. But I think this is just a bilge between bulkheads and next to it is the heads seacock.. So where is the shower pump/box? I will look on my next trip to the boat as it is kinda limited access now that it is in storage for the winter.

You found the shower pump. Thats it under the stairs next to the seacock. It will run constant when you turn the breaker on. You need to turn it on and off before and after your shower.

Slightly off topic but here is a before/after pic of one of the mirrors in the aft cabin, it was in bad shape but replaced with plastic mirror from home depot, turned out like new.. Just used a router to trace the old one on a new piece of mirror... In 1989, the decor of the Prestancia included lots of mirrors, this one was replaced but the other 2 in the aft cabin are going to get a new life as something else.... perhaps a white board or corkboard...

I thought I would add a picture of this pump as I found it, We are exploring the boat (89 Prestancia) and will have lots of questions about different stuff.. I plan on posting lots of pictures of things so that others can benifit from what we find..

nice job on the mirror. you can just shop vac the old anti freeze out of the sump area if it bugs you, my shower pump will never empty it completly

Not sure whether your shower sump set up is original or not but it is very different to the later ones.
The later sumps are a sealed box (gasket sealed clear top cover) that stops the smell of stale soapy water etc. moving through your cabin, they also have a basic mesh filter and a float switch.

Thanks for the compliment on the mirror... I think the present shower pump set up may need to go on the list for a refit.. It appears to have not been used.. but I am not sure how I could fit a sealed box in that small area..

Have a look at www.attwoodmarine.com search for shower and drain sump pump system.
Alternatively fit a float switch and a clear cover to your existing set up, this will alleviate the need to turn the pump on and off as required (more likely to forget to turn it off) and avoid the smell without constant cleaning of the sump.

Yes, I think that's what I need to do, however there are going to be two problems to deal with.. The spot for this pump is very small, as seen in the pic above and that the seacock is located right next to it. Any suggestions or perhaps a pic of the set up on a later model prestancia?. I am leaning towards just putting a cover on the whole thing and adding a float switch and a filter..

Personally I would ensure the lining was in good condition (not becoming chalky) fit a float switch and seal with a piece of clear perspex or the like.
