1989 force 50 hp starting problem

ok so i bought an outboard from a guy and he said it ran i finally got it hooked up to my boat and all seems great except it wont start by not starting i mean the starter doesnt engage at all i have power to the motor where it needs to be i followed the yellow/start wire all the way to the starter solenoid and it does what its supposed to when i turn the key to start it it lights up but the solenoid wont engage to give power to the starter naturally i thought the solenoid was bad i went and got a new one and had the same problem i bypassed the the solenoid and the starter turned fine so pretty much i have my positive on one side of the solenoid and on the other is the wire to go to the starter and on top a little yellow wire that sends the signal to switch the solenoid to on and everything works except the solenoid wont give power to the wire to the starter and its a new solenoid so whats the problem? is it supposed to be grounded and if it is how? any help would be greatly helpful thank you

I think most solenoids are wired this way. Red 4ga wire from battery into the solenoid. Red 4 ga wire comes out and goes to the starter. The terminal on the left get a ground from the block. There should be a big bolt in the block where the relays and battery are all grounded, use that. The terminal on the right goes to the neutral safety switch. There is another small wire with the 4ga coming from the battery. that wire goes to the circuit breaker. Make sure the buttom is pushed in before you attempted to start. If your soleniod is wired like this then it should at least turn the starter. And make sure that the shifter is in neutral.
