Ok, little update, my left stringer is toast. I opened the glass from the stringer on one side to check how good/bad the wood is. Well it's toast. My plan now is to replace this stringer except of like 5" towards the bow, I just cant reach up there.

That was a tough spot for me too.... I used a sawzall and carefully chipped away at it....took a long screwdriver and scraped out the rest.

I left the inside part of the old fiberglass in place cleaned it real well. When I set the stringer I put resin and csm against the glass and dropped the stringer in....the csm and resin glued the wood to the old glass.

IF it's a HF one, mine did the same thing so I bought a Porter Cable at Lowe's BIG Difference.

Thats just not right :facepalm: Sounds like the brushes are breaking down I see a trip to Harbor Freight in your future...... unless you get a DeWalt or something like that....You will have some minor setbacks.....This too shall pass

It was not a HF, but close. It was a Skill. I am looking right now at a Dewalt (7Amp) for $55, TSC has them on sale for $49, so I will try to get the same price from Lowes minus the 10% they have for there price guarantee and the another 10% military discount. Maybe if I find more stuff, they give me money to take the tool. LOL

Update: I got the port stringer cut out as far as I can reach and sanded the old glass down. I took the instrument panels out, except of the one where the steering wheel is attached to. Can someone point me in the right direction how to get the steering system out.

Can you post close up pics of the steering from the side and from under the dash. It would help to determine what your issues are.

I should have known better. Of curse you guys need pictures, how else should you see what I see. duuhh :facepalm:

there are three bolts going through the dashboard, these bolts spinning inside the steering housing.

Loosen the center nut as far as you can but leave it on. Spray some liguid wrench on the shaft and beat on the silver steering wheel adapter with a rubber mallet. Wait 30 minutes. Put your steering wheel back on. Now start yanking and wiggling and wobbling and pull back on the wheel HARD. The adapter is on a Tapered/Keyed shaft and will need to be broken loose. Can be a BEAR sometimes but it will come off. Once the wheel adapter is loose, take the nut off slide the adapter off and the rest is a piece of cake. By the way, that is a Rotary Steering System. Keep the cables lubed and it will last as long as you have that boat.

so the metal part where the steering wheel attaches to needs to come off. Did I get that right? Don't have a wheel anymore so I need to find something else to pry it loose.

Yep, that is correct. That silver hub is the SW adapter. You Might be able to use a flywheel puller since it has those bolt holes. It oughta work about the same. Big pair of channel locks or Pipe WRench to hold the adapter while loosening the big center nut.

After you get the sucker off you can hang it up from the rafters. Make a funnel of sorts using paper and a plastic trash bag and duct tape from the ends that attach to the motor. Pour in some 20 weight motor oil thinned with a little mineral spirits and move the steering as best you can to slide the cables back and forth and then let it set for a couple of days or until you see some oil come out the other end. Kinda primitive but it works. Learned this from an old guy at a marina. Works equally well on throttle and shifter cables.

Thanks for the link Rick, I got that downloaded already.
You tell me that there a re a lot of cut wires, lol, it looks better that way then before. All my wires were spliced every 8 - 10" throughout the whole boat. The electrical part will be another BIG issue.

How accurate do I need to cut the bulkheads and stringers?

As accurately as possible. The deck must meet the hull in the same location as it was when you started The bottom, sides and tops of the stringers should be as close to the originals as possible.
