Hey all,
My motor has always had some Idleing issues, and my prop got spun. So I took my motor into see what was up, the shop told me the prop was spun and the electronics were bad, causing the idle problem. Ok, since I just had the carbs rebuilt like two months earlier I figured that sounds resaonble enough. The motor always had great power so I thought new electronics, and rebuilt prop I'll be back on the water with no worries Right. Wrong, I took the boat out immediatly after they were done with it. The motor now a full speed is more like No wake speed. It feels and sounds like thats all the power is has. I even checked the carbs to see if the throttle cable was misaligned and not opening the butterflys wide open. Well they were wide open and that is all the power my motor is producing. So I took it back to the repair shop and they said don't know it ran fine in the shop, then he pulled a spark plug out and ran a bore scope into a cyclinder and said oo look the cyclinder wall is scraped. Something must have happend between there and the lake and they would have to charge me more to repair. I said I don't think so it ran fine, had Idling issue and now it don't run at all. Anyway they said they weren't going to fix it unless I pay. So Lake Sharpe Marina- Pierre, SD watch out for these guys if ever up there bunch of crooks. Anyway, i need to diganose my issue. O yeah they didn't fix my prop either, they just painted it!!! Still spun.

Just need to know what to do about the power loss, all I can tell you is they replaced the electronics

Re: 1989 Johnson 200GT power problem!

the gt are good motors ,first get you a manual ,oem is best .
you could have one of quite a few probs carbs , improper timeing ,
cylinders dropping out .i had simular issues when i got my first 150 .
evin crossflow ,with the manual and the people on here ,
ive learned a lot , and also had probs with mechs ,so i got a maual and trouble shot step by step, asked questions ,called different mechs found
some that would talk ,and were honest , i dont use them know have been thru 5 or 6 different crossflows with manual dva meter and help from the guys on here ,dont let one outboard mech put a bad taste in your mouth ,
lots of them are honest but unfortunatley there are a few ,that are
fly by nights that give the rest a bad rap, some of the guys on here
have been mechs for a long time , some times they need to see that
you are willing to get a manual and get and understanding of these motors
its easy to throw parts at a problem that can be diagnosed with afew tools
spark tester dva meter and manual will get you a long way dont let it
scare you off you can do maint and repair on your motor patience
is everything.if ya need something you can pm me ,or call and well talk
good luck and welcome to iboats they have been invalauable to me
after a rocky start ,but i can tell you most mechs out there wont talk much or offer awhole lot of help some of these guys once you get going will go out of there way to help they just want to see what you are going to do .
by the way im in louisiana and i bow hunt fish/ deer / also gun hunt and fish

First of all............Welcome to iBoats BowhntnfishinSD!!!!!!!

Agree with the above. You won't find a better forum out there.........period! With that said. You should post your model number in your thread so that others can further assist you in diagnosing your problem. While your jotting those numbers down, and in the meantime, you need to perform a compression test to make certain your working with a sound platform. If you have good compression in all 6 holes (100 psi +) and are within 10%. You'll be going again in no time. There's truely no better mechanic than the one sitting in front of YOUR screen. You can do this. Do that compression test and post your results as follows:

X.......X
X.......X
X.......X

Do yourself a favor and spend your money wisely. Stay away from the Clymer and Seloc manuals and stick with an OEM Manual. Post that model number and we'll help locate one for you. One place that has them for certain is right here at iBoats. Click on the "store" link and you should have no trouble finding one. Some of these guys, who are senior member in this forum, can and have walked newbie's through a complete powerhead rebuild. One such newbie was me. Your in good hands here!!!! Good luck on the compression test.............. ALAN

P.S........ It's probably best if you don't slam tech's in the forum. Especially when you give their names and addy's. Good way to get started off on the wrong foot with the moderators...... ;-)

yes agreed comp test number one .
that way you will know wether you need to persue the sit.
i meant to put that in there but i figured if ya used your manual
that would guide you to that step first.
and as outdoors man said .
with the manual and help from these techs i have rebuilt
two 150 crossflows and a couple of loopers and several smaller motors
i have a strong automotive background .but had 0 knowlege of outboards and know i can build powerheads ,with the advise of these forums

Re: 1989 Johnson 200GT power problem!

Hey Guys,
thanks for the response, I have the manual. I bought it when I first purchased this motor. It had issues when I first bought it but I was just a blown head gasket. I don't mean to slam any techs, as I am one my self just in a different industry. I just wanted to let everyone no about what happend to me. My motor had Idle issues and I got it back not running. I understand things happen but they didn't even try to help, just wanted more money, So I'm obvisouly not happy with them. But besides that I still think I can fix this motor, I will be in South Dakota (thats were the motor is) this comming weekend. I will get you guys the comperssion numbers ect.

Once again guys I'm not trying to start stuff, and looking back probly could have left that comment out- but I didn't and I have to move on:) With that I look forward to hearing from you guys.
Thanks again
Humbled!!
