Re: 1990 4.3 liter dies after about 30-45 minutes

Amazing, that I have a red and white 1990 Celebrity 3.0 and we are having the same problem at the same time lol. I took out the fuel pump bowl a couple of days ago and there was a good bit of trash in there and the filter spring was broke. I took off the filter on the Carb and there was trash in their too. I think mine came from sinking a few years back and nobody bothered to clean out the fuel pump. Because after it sank I used a mercury water seperator straight out of the gas tank and changed it every year. Had a starting problem due to the Carb problem and am waiting on a part so I can crank it and see if the cleanup fixed it.

mical, The fuel filter water seperator which was mentioned, looks just like a large oil filter. Attaches upside down very similiar to an oil filter so water will settle to the b ottom. You will have to buy the filter and the mount it screws to. Mine is on the front of the engine below the pump, very easy to access and change after the initial installation. I beleive the clear tube coming from the rear of the carb going to the fuel pump is there incase the pump diaphram ruptures excess gas will be routed up that line and be dumped into the carb instead of the bilge. I may be wrong, but I have heard that fuel in that line means something is wrong with the fuel pump, as it should usually be dry. I was wondering how it could be clogged when it does not carry fuel on a regular basis. You said that the pump was indeed bad, so it could have been pumping fuel through it for awhile. Just my guess and opinion. Good for you that you solved your problem. Someone mentioned that the antisiphon would be in the pickup tube, and the pickup tube would be attached to the 90 deg fitting on top of the tank. On my 88 OMC the antisiphon valve was located before the 90 deg fitting outside of the tank and when I removed the 90 deg fitting the pickup tube was not attached. Could it be that the pickup tube is attached to the tank access panel which the 90 deg fitting screws out of. It must be as it pumps gas normally, if the pickup tube were lying in the bottom of the tank it wouldn't. I have been through my entire fuel system and everything has been very clean, filters, antisiphon valve, carb etc. No trash or water at all. Where did all your debree come from and am I just lucky?

Im guessing the all the crap in the pump is just built up from the fact that it is 16 years old. My antisiphon valve is attatched to the fuel pump.

An anti siphon valve cannot be attached to the fuel pump. If it was, it wouldn't allow fuel to the pump and the engine wouldn't run at all. <br />The anti siphon valve looks like a hose barb fitting with a check ball inside. And prevents fuel from siphoning out of the TANK should a hose come loose or break. It is ALWAYS connected to the fitting with the stand pipe that goes into the bottom of the tank.

Oh I thought somebody said it was the vlave you can shut the fuel off to the motor. But I know what valve you are talking about, it is conected to the 90 degree elbow on the tank, i guess thats the antisiphon vavle.

Yes mical that is your antisiphon valve. DonS I think you answered a question for me. When I removed the 90 deg fitting from the tank, after removing antisiphon valve from it, the pickup tube did not come out with the fitting. Is my assumption, that the pickup tube is part of the black fitting or access panel that the 90 deg fitting was removed from. Someone mentioned that the tube should have came out when I removed the 90 deg fitting, but the 90 deg fitting just turned out of the access panel. If the tube was in the bottom of the tank then I wouldn't be pumping fuel as I am, Is this correct? Thanks Don and Good luck mical, the members here are invaluable. Donwon
