I have a 1991 3.0 LX Mercruiser with and Alpha One Drive. I have been having issues with the starter and have the following questions:
1. Would a faulty starter result in slow cranking? I initially thought it was a low battery but have a brand new battery and have had the engine crank very slowly even after a full charge. This is intermittent and until recently usually just required a few attempts and the engine would crank at the proper speed.
2. In addition to slow cranking on occasion, the starter also intermittently fails to crank at all. This happened this weekend on the lake and since then has not cranked since.

3. Lastly, the service manual calls for either a Delco Remy or a Delco PG200. Would either of these work as a replacement? The starter that is on it now is the Delco Remy but the replacements for this style are more money than the PG200. Just trying to be cheap since fixing the starter will likely only allow me to discover other things I need to spend money on.

As always, the info and help are greatly appreciated.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... Ya, a bad starter can do that,...

Smokin' from where you say, says the load is way too high....

You need a Marine rated starter, with the same, what appears to be, straight across bolt pattern, for a Chevy motor....

Lots, 'n Lotsa companies are peddlin' 'em,... iboats included...

Thanks for the reply. Is there a trick in getting the starter off of the side of the block? I have removed all of the connections and bolts but cant seem to get it to come away from the side of the motor. I looked in the service manual and it simply says remove from motor.....ok.....tried that. Any pointers or directions on where I can get some direction on removal would be helpful. Thanks,

Ayuh,.... It's held on by 2 bolts,... If they're out, it's probably rust stuck...
