Motor is a revision B 1991 Force 70HP. Recently rebuilt.
It's winter time so I'm going to be doing some work fixing up the boat and praying for an early spring. Anyway I've got 4 things that are of concern, in no particular order:
1. The motor stalls in gear at idle sometimes (usually when I'm trying to pull into the ramp against the river current, which is about the worst time for it to stall).
2. Starts fine at the ramp, run 3 miles up river no problem, but after 45 minutes of fishing it's time to move elsewhere and the motor does the following:
Starts fine, but at about 2000 rpm (just starting to plane) the sound changes from revving upwards to drowning (its a growling deep sound) and if I continue pressing the throttle it will die (I've got to back down and try again). After 3 or 4 times throttling up and down it will "catch" and rev to 5000 no problems. The "old man at the ramp" who seems to know about everything said it's probably a fuel pump or air getting into the fuel line. I'm not sure how old the fuel tank is, nor the pump, so I was thinking replace both and go from there, but does anyone have input on that?
3. The plug to open and remove the gear oil is a flat head and it's stripped to the point I cant get it open (I think it was overtightened), are there any "magic tricks" besides taking it and having it drilled out?
4. I run my oil a bit rich, like 45:1, but I seem to go through plugs 3 times per season, and I know when it's time if it gives any lick of trouble starting on a day over 75 degrees (I have the magic Force that starts quickly every time, unless it's just coming out from the winter, or it's really cold out). Is it odd to go through so many sets of plugs?
