If this area is good what are the chances that it gets worse towards the bow?

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,...

Generally speakin', boats rot from the transom forward...

If it makes you feel any better, I still think you got a pretty good deal at $1500 even if you have to rehab it. Welcome to the forum.

Well that is at least hopefull.

I will take some pics of the floor replacement tonight if I can. It is not "too" horrible looking from what I have seen up here. He kept the boat out of the weather since he did it, but it is just bare plywood. I have no idea if it is marine grade. What is the right thing to do? Marine grade then glass over it or just leave the bare wood?

Don't leave bare wood. Glass over if it's not rotten.

I wouldn't Waste the money on Marine grade...

Exterior is sufficent...

If what's there ain't Rotten,...

Re: 1992 Astro 17FSX resto...Complete Newbie here.

I am going to get into it this week.

I want to mold in a ski/rod compartment in the floor.

Anyone know of any nify prefab compartments/lids or is that a build your own kind of thing.

Most are made with an aluminum frame (Z channel), with a plywood door, you can cover the door with whatever you use on the deck ( floor). Any weld shop can tack up the corners the frame for you.....I've made several of them, very easy.

I got a quote today to do al lthe seats and pads for $1000.00 including materials. marine grade vinyl. Think I am going to take it as I have no sewing skills whatsoever and do not have any of the equipment to do it. This sound reasonable?

Looks like I will have some good weather this week/weekend to get cracking on the deck as well.

Yes that sounds reasonable to have a pro do it.

I have been looking for prices to replace my seats in my Astro F18 Quickfire, from what I have found the quoted price you have is a good deal. I am not sure of your boat but mine has aluminum compartment doors, the livewell doors are fiberglass.

Nice boat, I think you made a good deal on your purchase. Keep us updated of your progress

Re: 1992 Astro 17FSX resto...Complete Newbie here.

OK I ripped up the carpet today and got bad news and good news.

The good news is the hull is still completely solid.

The bad news is this has got to be the worst floor repair I have ever seen....well I have not really seen any other floor repair in person, but this one is no good. :p

I only have a few pics, I will take more tomorrow, but the plywood is soaked all the way through, and the supports for the floor are a bit soggy as well. still structually intact, but I think they are coming out.

So my goal is to see if I can just replace all of this and put in a new deck and make it a nice surface that drains well.

Re: 1992 Astro 17FSX resto...Complete Newbie here.

If the transom is safe...?
I'd use it this yr the way it is,
gather information and material as you go along then start the project in the fall,
you'll know exactly how to proceed from there and the project will move more quickly.

Taking it on now, at the beginning of the season, without experience? it might not see the water til next yr.

If the rubrail was removed and the cap was off it already then it would make sense to proceed gutting it, but it looks safe for at least a yr or more.
By the end of the season you might be in the mkt for something bigger anyway.

Just another option.

I am contemplating surrender.

I am normally not afraid of a challenge. Restored a 71 Monte Carlo, rebuilt many a motorcycle and dirt bike, built my kids huge play fort in the back yard and built my own deck, but this is looking daunting!

Found wet foam out towards the sides of the boats :(

Transom seems rock solid. There was no foam in the center of the boat so I am thinking water never sat there.

Re: 1992 Astro 17FSX resto...Complete Newbie here.

Well it has all gone to bad :(

Pulled up the rest of the floor and I have found where the patchwork that you see here holds in the foam on both sides where the old stringers used to be.

The nice cut out of foam was full of water. Previous owner cut the old rotten stringers out and patchworked this in. what is patchworked in is not even connected to what is left of the rest of the stringers. Foam is full of water.

Like my collection of worm food?

Looks like the only way to fix this properly is to pop the top and dig in.

So how exactly does one go about pulling the top of a boat?

  1. Pull motor
  2. Remove rub rail
  3. Drill rivits
  4. Pull

Yep, dig in. Most the time patchwork not done properly is worst than not doing anything, because it hides some real problems. Tear in and do it right, you'll be glad you did.

Don't surrender. If you can rebuild a Monte Carlo this will be cake. It's not that difficult just a lot of grunt work. It will be worth it. You've got the right order as far as popping the cap off. There also may be some tabs around the cap that are glassed over to also hold the cap on. After church today I will be in the process of removing my cap. Will post pictures later. It will make it a whole lot easier to work on the floor, stringers, and transom. Wish I knew you were in Atlanta. I was just there from Wednesday and got back late last night. Would have loved to have stopped by and looked at your boat.

I am just north of Atlanta in Cumming Ga. Right next to Lake Lanier.

Yeah think I am going to take the dive. Time is my only real issue, but here goes.

Drain the carb bowl.
Shoot some oil in the cyl's and leave sparkplugs in.
De-rig the outboard, remove fuel tank.
Put outboard on a stand, wood or auto engine stand.
Engine hoist is nice to have.
Then you're ready to dig in.
