Thanks Uncle Willie, that is a good suggestion.

90stingray, I have one idle mixture screw. Here is a picture of the carb.

I have the drive submerged in a tub of water. The boat did start making a railing noise coming from the drive. I assume that is the impeller? I should take a look at that. I don't know the Mercruiser outdrives at all. This is my first one. I really like the looks of it. It's an Alpha One. I have to find out where the impeller is located and how to change it. I guess there is also one for the engine? It looks to me that there is only one large water pump on this engine driven by the front pulleys like on a car.

Should I stop working getting the engine running right and go ahead and change the impeller on the drive?

Well... the impeller can be brittle and break apart causing blockage in the cooling paths and causing you a headache. That's why they are usually changed every other year. The rattling could be a number of things... once you pull the drive off, you will be able to inspect further. And yes, it needs to come off. You need to look at bellows, ujoints, gimbal bearing, etc... To change impeller you will have to split the drive apart. Its not as bad as it sounds. Just post up your s/n's and you will be directed to which factory manual you can download. Post up some pics of your new ride!

The impeller is in the bottom of the outdrive. Just above the Anti-Ventilation plate.
?? You have downloaded the manuals as sugested in post #5 ???

If the outrdive is not spitting (warm) water right after startup, the impeller goes to the top of the priority list!
If you are moving water, get it running first, but change the impeller before going to sea.
It has been sitting in a fixed position for years and changing it is more than justified.

Running without water will melt the impeller in about 15 seconds.
Running without an impeller will melt the engine in a few minutes.

And ... a TUB of water is prefered over MUFFs. Good Move! :D
Once it is running, keep a hose flowing to overflow the Tub, or you will soon have a tub full of boiling water!

I think that engine is normally just seawater cooled. (No Water pump on motor.)
Or, do you have a Closed cooling system? (Water pump, Radiator cap, Heat Exchanger.)
You could be looking at the power steering pump.
