Thanks Uncle Willie, that is a good suggestion.
90stingray, I have one idle mixture screw. Here is a picture of the carb.

I have the drive submerged in a tub of water. The boat did start making a railing noise coming from the drive. I assume that is the impeller? I should take a look at that. I don't know the Mercruiser outdrives at all. This is my first one. I really like the looks of it. It's an Alpha One. I have to find out where the impeller is located and how to change it. I guess there is also one for the engine? It looks to me that there is only one large water pump on this engine driven by the front pulleys like on a car.
Should I stop working getting the engine running right and go ahead and change the impeller on the drive?
Well... the impeller can be brittle and break apart causing blockage in the cooling paths and causing you a headache. That's why they are usually changed every other year. The rattling could be a number of things... once you pull the drive off, you will be able to inspect further. And yes, it needs to come off. You need to look at bellows, ujoints, gimbal bearing, etc... To change impeller you will have to split the drive apart. Its not as bad as it sounds. Just post up your s/n's and you will be directed to which factory manual you can download. Post up some pics of your new ride!
